How do you replace the bulb in the shift console of 02 firebird?

Ok so my fiance has an 02 firebird, and the light that illuminates Park, Nuetrual, 1,2,3 in the shift panel in the center console is not working. It is the 3800 v6 model, automatic trans. I am not sure if it is the bulb, or a fuse? I have looked through the manual that came with the car but did not find anything that would explain this!! If it were a fuse, that would b a pretty easy fix. If not then i am not sure what is involved with replacing the bulb? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Lift up the armrest on the centre console. there may be 2 screws just near the front of the compartment, undo the screws and see if the plastic section that the gearshift goes through will lift up, you may have to pull it back a little to let the plastic locating lugs (if it has any) come out from the front.
This should give you access to the bulb, put a new bulb in and turn on the lights to see if it works
Hope this has helped you

If your dash lights work, it's not the fuse. You have to carefully take the shifter handle and the the shift range faceplate off to replace the bulb(s). I say carefully because you have to look for all the screws and/or tab releases to pop it out.

Is there a light in the center console of unidentified vehicle where you shift into drive? reverse, park?

Usually there is a light there fastened to the lower part of the gearlever and a mask as part of the gearlever position markings so it appears the selected position illuminates.
The models I have been associated with use a low wattage bulb of 1.5, 2.2 or 4 watts.

Gaining access for replacement can be a simple or a protracted affair. Sometimes it is a largely intuitive process and sometimes instructions are needed to prevent damage to delicate items of trim.

2001 FordEscape- dash trans indicator appears to be LCD type, will not illuminate at nigh when park/headlights turned on..other dash illumiination lights work OK

this is a pretty simple fix, even though the screen is LCD, the illumination is from a small bulb on the back side of the instrument cluster. pull the instrument cluster out, and replace the bulb!

It wont shift out of park

Check your brake light fuse in the fuse box. Some models will not allow the shifter to move from the park position if the brake lights are not functioning. Hope this helps.

Good Luck,
Richard
