Just bought a 2004 Elantra (93000 miles) with 5 speed tranny. With the hood up and my daughter behind the wheel I noticed a rattling sound (in neutral) coming from the clutch/transmission area when the...

I would be checking the throwout bearing. But, if the clutch isn't slipping, maybe leave it for now?

If you put it in 5th gear, let out the clutch with handbrake applied and it stalls--the clutch isn't slipping for sure.

Rattle sound when I hold in my clutch pedal

Hi:
A possible cause of this rattle is the clutch throw out bearing. It is wjhat pushes against the pressure plate to release the clutch. It does require the transmission to be removed to replace it, and while you have the transmission out, it would be a good idea to replace the clutch, pressure plate and pilot bearing too.

Relaced transmission and now have a rattle sound comind from torque coverter area, noise gets louder when gas pedal is applied and noise goes away during shifting of transmission btu comes right back after...

your torque converter is rattling that is the clutch on the stator inside is worn out... You can stall test your torque converter ...Do this but follow correctly. put on parking brake..on the asphalt,,,, block all four wheels...push the gas to the floor for just 2 seconds...down one, two lift off gas pedal quickly..
when your doing this WATCH your RPMs they should reach to around 2200-2400 between the 2-4 rpm if not the Torque Converter is toast!!!! If your car passes the STAll test then when you tranny was put back on one of the fly wheel covers are rubbing....!!!.

When the clutch is released, there is a lot of noise coming from the front of the transmission in all gears including neutral

this sounds like a bad clutch throwout bearing in tranny. if it makes a rattling noise then its the bearing. when clutch pedal is pushed in.

Clutch rattle

this sounds like an adjustment issue. you did not mention the mileage...The clutch is released by a bearing, this release bearing needs to come back off of the fingers of the clutch pressure place, early wear and noise happens.

Near the end of the clutch life, you may find that you cannot release any more, if your model is adjustable.

Start with proper clutch release adjustment.

Won't go into gear when running, clutch rattle sound.

I would say it is your clutch (In your case it more than likely the throw out bearing if you hear rattle sound.) with the amount of miles and the year of the vehicle. Clutch plates, just like brake pads, eventually wear out. Consider yourself fortunate that you have gone this far without having to replace it.
