Question about 1998 Ford Windstar

2 Answers

Someone took the heat shield off on my 1998 ford windstar to replace the Speed Sensor and they never put it back on. Where exactly does it go, where are the bolts at the hold it on? Can I find a picture of this somewhere or can someone give me a very detailed description?

I can post pics for just about anything but I need to know what you are talking about specifically....are talking about the dust shield on your front brakes (Dust Shield) or are you talking about an aluminium plate around the tranny/engine area?

I have a 1998 Ford Windstar with a 3.8 liter engine. Where is the crankshaft sensor

The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor on the 1998 Windstar with 3.8L is located near the crankshaft pulley on the front cover. There is a shield mounted over the CKP sensor that you'll need to remove to access the sensor.

Would you care to share why you suspect the CKP sensor is bad? Typically with Fords a bad CKP will cause a no-start condition due to no spark, but you'll still hove good fuel pressure.

Were is speed sensor located in a 1999 ford windstar

The Vehicle Speed Sensor is located on the right side of the transaxle extension housing. ( passenger side) It may be hard to spot because it is covered over with a foil type heat shield. If you plan on replacing it yourself please Note, You need to remove the clip and swap the plastic drive gear onto the new sensor and secure it with the clip. Good Luck From Ernie @ RedDeer, Alberta, Canada.

O2 sensors on 1998 ford windstar

1998 Ford Truck Windstar 3.8L SFI 6cyl, there are 4 oxygen sensors on the Windstars They are divided into 2 banks of 2. Bank 1 is the for the rear 3 cylinders of the engine - Bank 2 is for the front 3 cylinders. Bank 1 / Sensor 1 (upstream) is located just below, in the pipe, the exhaust manifold on the back of the engine.

REMOVE TIP: you may have to bend part of the transmission heat shield out of the way - be sure to put it back when done.
Bank 1 Sensor 2 (downstream) is located just past the drivers side catalytic converter.
Bank 2 Sensor 1 (upstream) is located just below the exhaust manifold, in the pipe, at the front of the van - access is from the top.
Bank 2 Sensor 2 (downstream) sensor is located just past the passenger side catalytic converter.

NOTES: * Use lots of penetrating oil - allow to soak - to make removal easier and avoid damaging the exhaust pipe

Hope this help; TY for using Fixya (remember rated and comment this).

Illustrated diagram on how to remove speed sensor for windstar 98

The Vehicle Speed Sensor is located on transaxle, at the rear of the engine. I would check the harness connector to be sure it is clean and connected tightly. Also check the wiring for cuts and chaffing. Since it is fairly inexpensive, only about $42.00 from Ford, you may want to consider replacing it, at least to eliminate it as a possibility. You may want to go to a muffler shop to have this done like speedy, I believe the flex pipe needs to be undone to get to the VVS. If there is an Auto Zone around your area, you could always ask them for the step by step instructions to replacing the VVS, and it's free of charge. Good luck and hope this helps.

Find and replace speed sensor

Hi,

On Top of the Transmission. You can see the Black sensor just under the Air Breather Intake assembly in front of the driver side. It has an electrical wire connection and is bolted onto the tranny with (2)5/16" hex head bolts and (1)1/2" nut that holds the throttle arm to the sensor. Very easy to replace.

Thanks.

I need to find and replace the speed sensor

your transmission oil pan is at the bottom of the trans, the heat shield you are looking to remove is on the right side of the vehicle above where the axle goes into the trans unit. You should find the sensor mounted there with one bolt and one wire plug, hope this is helpful, let me know
