Question about 2003 Ford Windstar

3 Answers

I have a 2003 Ford Windstar and the venting system is stuck in the defrost setting. It will heat and cool but only using the front dash and the rear, but not the driver area vents. I am assuming a vacuum is stuck in the defrost setting. How do I go about repairing this myself? Do I have to remove the dash? If so, how is this done in this vehicle?

I had the same issue with my van you need to remove the radio ,I got a special tool from a friend and once you remove the radio you will see a square white motor that does all the air control remove it and you should be good to go . I got 3 actuatorw at a local wreckers for 10 bucks and I think it took me all but 15 min to replace . The hardest thing was to remove the radio, but simple with the right tool

The dash does not necessarily have to be removed, first check all vacuum lines to the inside of the vehicle. and any others you have access too.
sometimes you only have to get the dash to move out a couple inches to get the blend door actuator. and it may need a blend door too as the pins are susceptible to breakage also.
it is best to get a book for your specific vehicle. Haynes ,Chilton books are widely distributed through auto zone ,checker ,pep boys.

Most likely the blend door actuator. Do you hear clicking behind the dash? If so that's the problem. Excellent video on youtube goes throught the whole process, about 30- 40 mins to fix.

I have no vacum at all under the dash on a 1998 ford windstar to change the heater blower to differnt settings it is on defrost now but there is no vacum there to change it whats the problem

THIS SYSTEM HAS NO VACUUM CONTROL IT IS DONE WITH ELECTRIC MOTORS I KNOW FOR THE BLEND FOR HEAT/COLD SETTING IF YOU REMOVE THE RADIO AND BEZEL IN CENTER OF DASH YOU CAN LOOK IN AND SEE THE ELECTIC MOTOR WHEN THESE GO BAD YOU WILL GENERALLY HEAR A CLICKING SOUND WHENEVER A CHANGE IS MADE ON DASH UNIT LIKE TURNING IT FROM HOT TO COLD NEVER HAD ISSUE WITH VENT CONTROL MAY USE SAME STYLE MOTOR HOWEVER IF IT USES VACUUM IT IS SUPPLIED FROM PORT ON REAR OF UPPER INTAKE PLENUM TOWARDS PASSENGER SIDE SEVERAL VACUUM LINES CONNECT THERE ON A 3.8 V6 WHICH I ASSUME YOU HAVE HOPE THIS HELPS IF NOT CONTACT ME @ FIXYA

There is a vacuum leak under the hood. Find the vacuum line on the passenger side where it comes through the firewall and follow it to the engine. You system needs vacuum to operate and without it the default setting is on defrost for safety reasons.

Vent controls wont switch from defrost to any other selection replaced switch already I have a 2003 ford windstar, heat and cold air will only blow from the window defrost vents, any other selections...

You have a vacuum leak.Defrost is the default postion(no vacuum).
See if you can locate the small black vacuum line that goes inside the vehicle on the passenger side near the heater core. The trace it back, should see it going to a canister then to the intake manifold.Make sure it is not disconnected or broken somewhere.
