They are notorius for having issues with their fuel pumps. You can access them from inside the back of the car so you don't have to take out the tank. 2 of those I have opened before actually didn't need a new pump, all that happened was that the little fuel pipe that goes from the pump up to the outlet hose came off. I put a slightly longer piece of fuel line in with new clamps (about a $5 fix) and had no more problems.
I hope this helps.

Front oxygen sensor code. Check the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator and make sure it is ok before you replace the sensor. Any vacuum leak can also cause the code.

I have a 1996 volvo 850 station wagon and up until two days ago it worked perfectly for the past year. Now, however, when i start the engine it cuts out by itself after only a few seconds, and only won't...

Yes, it sounds like it is a fuel problem, whether it be the fuel pump, or more probably the catalytic converter. That check engine light can be checked by a mechanic where they can hook up to the engine and get the true error code to know why the light came on. Most often, it is an indicator that there is a problem with the catalytic converter. When that light goes on, the engine usually will run itself at reduced power. This could be why you are stalling when it is idle. Another thought is clogged fuel injectors, can't be sure, bring it to a mechanic for sure.
Good luck!! EJ Kudelka

1996 850 Wagon. Sticks in park, and more

Ultimately, Stick to the Above Diagnosis. You have already Discovered what the Problem is. DO NOT let the Mechanic repair all this other Stuff that May Come up until after the Ignition has been Replaced. The Ignition being Replaced should solve these Problems without any added Repairs unless they are Small ones. Should not Cost you all that Much either. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

1996 Volvo 850 wagon sputtered @ intersection smell of antifreeze

I would check that the auxilliary drive belt that runs the alternator and probably the water pump hasn't just broken, causing the engine to overheat and the battery to run flat. Just a suggestion, hope it helps.

If the ABS light is on, it's probably the ABS controller. Try Victor Rocha at http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/ for help.

The shift lock sticking is probably the microswitch going/gone bad: http://ipdusa.com/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=0&P_ID=3108&strPageHistory=search&numSearchStartRecord=1

You also need to scan the computer for the check engine light. It may help illuminate the problem. Snort. :)
