Tell them to show you the LABOR RATE MANUAL they are using to explain how many hours you will pay for job, multiply that by the LABOR RATE plus parts costs . Some jobs are labor intensive. Check it out. Hope this helps

Just read somehwere that its a common problem, and rather than pay a huge repair bill. many owners have elected to have the door MANUALLY put in the appropriate position for the season.

Go to a dealer and ask for the time to replace the coil packs only. There are books available that have labour times for most aspects of repairs to most vehicles.

2000 Ford Escort. Heater is not warming up. Replaced thermostat, replaced antifreeze. No appearance of antifreeze leaking. Any idea?

well most likely your 10 year old heater core is plugged, or the cool air flap on the box is broken. Ask a dealer to tell you which, if it is the door they may have a quick fix. if it is the core, then you are talking about more labor costs and you should find a shop which does heating & a/c work so they are good at pulling and replacing dashboards and are familiar with any short cuts.

I just had a fuel pump replaced in my chevy 04 cavalier-i know labor is pricey, but the bill was nearly 700 bucks! and that was all they did- does this seem fair? It sure doesnt to me considering you can...

Hello Calandra.
In Canada the delco fuel pump is listed at $400.00. Not sure where you are so the pump may be less where you live.
And the labor time listed is 1.8 hours to replace. Not including time to drain and refill your fuel tank.
Seems you received a little high priced bill to me.

No heat, air blender might need to be replaced.

If your climate panel works fine, but the air just isn't warm, it's probably the thermostat. I'm not as sure on the 1.8T engine, but I can guarantee you that a stuck thermostat is very common on the 2.8L V6 engine. I changed mine three weeks ago, and have done seven or eight of them in the past. It's very labor-intensive (the front of the car has to come off), so you may as well do the timing belt as well. I'd bet a shop will get you for 5-6 hours' labor. If you're in or near upstate NY, I can do it. If not, find an independent shop that specializes in European cars. Use a dealer as last resort only, as they'll get you for $100-120 per hour.

What to pay for a 35,000 mile checkup

The problem is that the shop charges is based on what they call "book rate". It's an actual labor guide that determines how long a job takes. They are not supposed to "add" hours if they go over the amount of hours allowed to do a particular job. Based on this labor guide, the shop will multiply the amount of hours a job SHOULD take by the shop's labor rate and this is the amount billed to a customer. For example, if a water pump replacement shows in the labor guide takes 2.0 hours, multiply by $75.00(this would be the shop's labor hourly rate) the amount for labor billed to customer is $150.00. Do some shopping around and you'll find out who would have the most reasonable shop rate for your particular job.
