Ok, the main cap bolts (crankshaft) vary depending on 6 or 12 pt. head. 6 pt. head is just 14 ft. lbs. 12 pt head on the bolt requires it to be tightened in 4 stages, 16 ft. lbs., then 32 ft. lbs., then turn additional 90 degrees, then another additional 90 degrees. The connecting rod cap bolts (pistons) get 2 stages, 15 ft. lbs. then additional 90 degrees.

Torque specs


B: INSTALLATION
1) Install the crankshaft pulley.
2) Install the pulley bolt.
To lock the crankshaft, use ST.
ST 499977400 CRANKSHAFT PULLEY
WRENCH
(1) Clean the crankshaft pulley thread using an
air gun.
(2) Apply engine oil to the crankshaft pulley bolt
seat and thread.
(3) Tighten the bolts temporarily with tightening
torque of 44 N·m (4.5 kgf-m, 33 ft-lb).
(4) Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolts.
Tightening torque:
127 N·m (13 kgf-m, 94.0 ft-lb)

I need to replace crank shaft timing sensor


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the sensor.
  3. Using a 28mm socket and pull handle, rotate the harmonic balancer until any window in the interrupter is aligned with the crank sensor.
  4. Loosen the pinch bolt on the sensor pedestal until the sensor is free to slide.
  5. Remove the pedestal to the engine mounting bolts.
  6. While manipulating the sensor within the pedestal, carefully remove the sensor and pedestal as a unit. To install:
  7. Loosen the pinch bolt on the new sensor pedestal until the sensor is free to slide.
  8. Verify that the window in the interrupter is still in the correct place.
  9. Install the sensor and pedestal as a unit while making sure that the interrupter ring is aligned within the proper slot.
  10. Install the pedestal and tighten the engine mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
3X Sensor
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the sensor harness connection to the sensor. Fig. 1: Unsecure the harness, then unfasten the bolt to remove the CKP sensor 86815102.gif

  3. Unsecure the sensor block bolt.
  4. Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the vehicle. Inspect the O-ring for cracks and replace if needed. To install:
  5. Install the new O-ring if needed and lubricate with engine oil.
  6. Install the sensor into the hole in the block.
  7. Install the mounting screw and tighten to 71-88 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm).
  8. Attach the sensor harness connector, then connect the negative battery cable.
Dual Crank Sensor Sections 3 and 4 of this manual also cover testing, removal and installation, and adjustment of many computer controlled components.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the belt(s) from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4. Remove the right front wheel and inner fender access cover.
  5. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt, then remove the harmonic balancer.
  6. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  7. Remove the sensor and pedestal from the engine block, then separate the sensor from the pedestal. To install:
  8. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor to the pedestal.
  9. Using tool J-37089 or equivalent, position the sensor with the pedestal attached, on the crankshaft.
  10. Install the pedestal-to-block retaining bolts. Tighten to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  11. Tighten the pedestal pinch bolt 30-35 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
  12. Remove tool J-37089 or equivalent.
  13. Place tool J-37089 or equivalent, on the harmonic balancer and turn. If any vane of the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer assembly. NOTE: A clearance of 0.025 in. (0.635mm) is required on either side of the interrupter ring. Be certain to obtain the correct clearance. Failure to do so will damage the sensor. A misadjusted sensor of bent interrupter ring could cause rubbing of the sensor, resulting in potential driveability problems, such as rough idle, poor performance, or a no-start condition.
  14. Install the balancer on the crankshaft. Install the balancer retaining bolt. Tighten the retaining bolt to 200-239 ft. lbs. (270-325 Nm).
  15. Install the inner fender shield.
  16. Install the right front wheel assembly. Tighten the wheel nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Install the belt(s).
  19. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
24X Crank Sensor
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt, then remove the harmonic balancer.
  5. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  6. Unfasten the sensor bolts, then remove the sensor. Fig. 2: The 24X crankshaft sensor is secured by two bolts 86815103.gif
    To install:
  7. Install the crankshaft sensor to the engine with the two mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  8. Attach the electrical harness to the sensor.
  9. Using tool J-29113 or equivalent, install the harmonic balancer to the vehicle.
  10. Apply a thread sealer such as GM 1052080 or an equivalent to the threads if the crankshaft balancer bolt, then tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Install the serpentine belt.
  13. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Need to replace the crankshaft position sensor


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine drive belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly and the right inner fender access cover/splash shield.
  5. Using a 28mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  6. Remove the crankshaft balancer, using a puller if necessary.
  7. For 1992-99 vehicles, remove the CKP sensor shield. Fig. 1: If so equipped, remove the crankshaft position sensor shield 89634g95.gif

  8. Unplug the sensor electrical connector.
  9. For 1987-91 vehicles, perform the following:
    1. Remove the sensor and pedestal from the block face.
    2. Remove the sensor from the pedestal.
  10. For 1992-99 vehicles, remove the sensor from the block face. To install:
    1. For 1987-91 vehicles, perform the following:
    2. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor on the pedestal.
    3. Position the sensor, with the pedestal attached, on crankshaft sensor installation tool J 37089 or equivalent.
    4. Install the bolt to hold the pedestal to the block face, then tighten to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm). Fig. 2: Position the crankshaft sensor tool on the crankshaft 89634g76.gif

    5. Tighten the pedestal pinch bolt to 30-35 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
    6. Remove the special tool.
    7. Place the crankshaft sensor tool on the crankshaft balancer and turn. If any vane on the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer.
  11. For 1992-99 vehicles, install the CKP sensor on the block.
    1. Install the retaining bolts and tighten to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
    2. Install the crankshaft position sensor shield.
    3. Attach the sensor electrical connector.
  12. Install the balancer on the crankshaft.
  13. Tighten the crankshaft bolt to 200-239 ft. lbs. (270-325 Nm) for 1987-91 vehicles. For 1992-99 vehicles, tighten to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 76°rotation.
  14. Install the inner fender shield and the right tire and wheel assembly.
  15. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  16. Install the serpentine belt.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.

Crankshaft sensor on a Monte Carlo 2001 SS 3.8 where is this on the car and how to replace it?


3.8L Engine
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove the serpentine belts from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4. Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly.
  5. Remove the right inner fender access cover.
  6. Hold the flywheel with a (J 37096) flywheel holding tool.
  7. Using 28 mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  8. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer, using a (J 38197-A) balancer remover.
  9. Remove the crankshaft position sensor shield (1). Do not use a pry bar.
  10. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  11. Remove the attaching bolts from the crankshaft position sensor.
  12. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the block face.
To install:
  1. Position the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor to the block.
  2. Install the bolts to hold the CKP sensor to the block face. Tighten the bolts to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  3. Reinstall the crankshaft position sensor shield.
  4. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  5. Position the crankshaft harmonic balancer on the crankshaft.
  6. Hold the flywheel with a (J 37096) flywheel holding tool.
  7. Using a (J 36660-A) torque/angle meter, tighten the harmonic balancer bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 76 degrees.
  8. Install the right inner fender access cover.
  9. Install the right front wheel and tire assembly.
  10. Tighten the wheel nuts to 104 ft. lbs. (140 Nm.).
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Reinstall the serpentine belts.
