Question about 1993 Mercury Topaz

1 Answer

The driver's side lock is jammed on my '93 Topaz. It appears that the power lock actuator/solenoid has seized up. I want to know if there are any other possibilities, and if not how do I replace the power lock actuator? I already have the door apart, but I can't figure out how to remove the actuator. I got the door open by inserting the key and turning to the 'unlock' position while repeatedly pulling the handle.

You've got the problem right. The door lock actuator once replaced will be the solution to your problem!
It'l cost you around $ 40-50 though!

Drivers door will lock with key but wont unlock

Year/make/model?? Sounds as if the drivers door lock actuator motor is seized/jammed in one direction not enabling the door to unlock. The door will most likely need panel disassembly for inspection/repair

Power lock does not work on rear door

Power door lock mechanisms required periodic lubrication to work correctly. Without periodic lubrication, the mechanisms stick and, eventually, the lock solenoid will fail and require replacement. As a rule, the power lock mechanisms and power window regulators should be lubricated every two to three years.
Begin by removing the door panel and lubricating all points of the lock mechanism, including the solenoid plunger. If that does not correct the condition, look for broken parts and mechanical obstructions. Manually move the solenoid plunger to make sure that the mechanism is not seized. If the mechanism will not move, detach the mechanism from the actuator solenoid and see if the solenoid itself has seized.
Check that the lock solenoid is receiving 12V when the LOCK/UNLOCK button is actuated. If not, trace down the electrical fault. If the mechanism moves freely, and there is voltage at the connector when the switch is actuated, the solenoid has burned out and should be replaced.

Drive side power door lock is not working

If the door lock works ok with a key, I would say the lock actuator is failing. Its a small electric solenoid that moves the lock rod.

Both my back doors will not open they are electric locks and both handles from outside move freely it seems like the door locks move

sounds like the acuators arent working. Could be the master control on the drivers door. This may sound stupid but try to unlock from pass side or rear doors using the power lock switch. If it doesnt work, try pulling the locks manually up by hand. If they unlock by hand, and you can open the doors, the actuators are definately not working. Then you have to find out if its the switch or the actuators, my guess would be the switch. Actuators usually dont die in pairs. if none of this is your problem, the doors may be seized due to rust or moisture issues. Let me know how you make out

93 mercury topaz will not start, battery checked, connections to starter/solenoid checked, how do you check solenoid?

the solenoid will maje no noise or just a click if bad. if good you will hear the sound of the inner plunger retracting with a poping noise
jump the solenoid wire to the battery cable to the starter and see if it works

My one door lock button is stuck down and others simply don't wor

You may need to remove your door panels (screws are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door) and then peel back the weather film on each door to see what could be causing the issues.. rusted wires, loose connection, broken linkages, seized linkages. I'm not sure what to do with your car since each door seems to be having a different issue, but I would check the locking mechanisms..
