Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Need a new transfer case; can not find a supplier

Can you suggest a reputable supplier for a Jeep Cherokee 5.2 ltr, V8 Automatic Orvis edition tansfer case, tag number 52098916? Alternatively, I have been advised that, specifically, the freewheel clutch within the case needs replacing. Is it possible to replace the part (and if so where can I get one) or does the whole case have to be swapped out? Advice would be really appreciated Thank you Darren

You can get the parts right from Chrysler. But: it takes experience and skill to recognize potential problem areas and correct them before closing the unit back up. I'm sure you can do the physical work but you may run into problems shortly after you have finished.
A good option is a junkyard unit from a vehicle that looks not to have been abused. or, a rebuilt unit(more expensive) I really can't recommend any particular source...my best source has retired.good luck which ever choice you make!

We bought a 1995 jeep grand cherokee orvis edition...the truck will not go into reverse...it makes a wierd grinding noise

Be sure that the truck is fully engaged in two wheel drive. It may have slipped out of gear on the transfer-case. Move the lever for 2 and 4 wheel drive back and forth a few times before shifting transmission.Good luck

Want to convert 93 grand cherokee from 4x4 to 4x2 .. what's neede

take the tansfer case out take the driveline off the front and get a new driveline going to the rear because without transfer case you rear driveline wont be long enough to reach the rear diff, about 8 hours work and $600.00 ruff est, that is only if the transmission is still good

Transmission fluid

If your vehicle has the 5.2 liter, aka 318 cubic inch engine, there is only one transmission model applicable and it is the 42 RE which used to be designated the A500.It is a 4speed overdrive transmission. If installing a rebuilt trans and new remanufactured dry torque convertor. You add 4 quarts initially, then fire the engine and add another 5-6 quarts for a total capacity of 9-10 quarts.Fluid level is checked with the trans in Neutral. If you are only dropping the pan,you will replace roughly 4 quarts. The transfer case fills separately, but uses the same automatic transmission fluid.Capacity for the transfer case is about 2 quarts/fill to the bottom of the fill plug hole.Good luck.
