Question about 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora

My 97 aurora overheats. Coolant level is fine, and the fans are working. is there a bleed valve for adding coolant or am i missing somthing else?

    ok its not the head gasket cause no water in oil, and you can feel water flowing through the upper radiator hose so i do think its moving so probably not water pump. any more ideas?

Run the engine with the filler cap off to bleed the system, if that fails water pump or head gasket needs to be looked at.

    the water can be heated by combusion in the cylinders when the head gasket has failed so you wont see oil then, there is a test you can do there is an addative you can put in the water if the head gasket has gone it will change colour to indicate there is exhaust emitions in the coolent unsure what its called sorry. have you looked at the thermostat maybe stuck.

first check coolant level in radiator coolant level sound low.if coolant overflow jug empty.coolant sysyem low, when add coolant to coolant overflow jug coolant level should stay at full cold mark.if coolant level okay,engine overheat while sitting or moving in slow traffic either coolant fan relay or fuse could be bad.or engine coolant temperature sensor could be bad. coolant sensor turn on cooling fan at certain temperature.hot wire check to make sure cooling fan motor not bad or short in wires.if all is good have pcm check it controls fan relay to through the coolant temperature sensor signal when coolant get hot.

Engine overheating i have replaced the radiator has plenty of water


replace thermostat.then bleed coolant system, this is how you do it.fill the cooling coolant system with 50 / 50 dexcool and water to raise boiling point,straight water will evaporate boil away cause engine to overheat catch fire thats why you need 50 / 50 mixture antifreeze and water.to bleed coolant system first fill coolant system until coolant stay at the full cold mark on the the coolant overflow jug,then you start engine allow it to idle,place the heater and ac control in any ac setting except max and the temperature control to the highest setting,run engine until lower hose to water pump is hot. with the engine hot run the engine speed up to 3000 rpm and allow it return to idle, repeat this 5 times. slowly open the bleed valve on the thermostat housing or look for bleed valve at the water pump heater hose.open bleed valve for 15 seconds to expel any trapped air.then top off the coolant as necessary,and when top radiator hose hot thermostat open up.keep adding cooling to overflow until coolant level stop at full cold mark dont over fill coolant.if engine seem like overheating while looking at cooling gauge turn off engine wait a while until cool off add more coolant until coolant level stay stable and dont drop any.when open radiator overflow cap use large rag over the radiator cap to keep from getting scald open radiator cap a little at a time but dont open radiator cap until engine cool down first.replace the radiator overflow cap, thermostat,and engine coolant temperature sensor and check the cooling fans fuses and relays see what happens.

hello my8,
First confirm that the engine is actually overheating - steam, no heat to the interior etc. Sometimes a temperature sensor will fail and give a misleading 'overheat' reading on gauge. For that matter sometimes the gauge can fail and give the same misleading reading. Check that the cooling fan comes on when the engine temperature starts to rise above 'normal'. If not check (in order) fan fuse, fan relay, fan sensor, fan. Real overheating is caused by a lack of coolant AND/OR lack of coolant flow. Modern cooling systems are 'closed'. In other words there should be little or no loss of coolant. If the level is significantly low you have a leak....either external or internal. With the coolant topped up to the correct level and the radiator cap on, run the engine and look for visible leaks...hoses, valves, radiator etc. Internal leaks, eg. head gasket will usually be accompanied by white exhaust smoke (steam), hard starting, rough running and bubbles in the expansion tank. Sometimes, though NOT always, you will fiand the engine oil has a milky look and/or engine oil will be mixed in with the coolant.

Lack of coolant flow can be caused by anything in the system that causes an obstruction......in order of common occurance......thermostat stuck closed, radiator blockage, heater core blockage, water pump failure. One last point. because of design considerations many vehicles have the radiator mounted at a different level than the uppermost coolant passages in the engine thus trapping air in the coolant passages. In short the system must be bled of air in order to properly fill with coolant. Such systems will incorporate bleed screws usually in either the top/side of the radiator, the top hose, the thermostat housing and sometimes in all of these points. To bleed out the air do NOT run the engine as you fill the radiator. Instead, open all bleed screws. As you fill the radiator coolant will run out of one or more bleed points. Close this bleed point(s). Continue to fill until coolant escapes from the next bleed point then close that one. Proceed until coolant has escaped from ALL bleed points then continue to fill to the correct level. The expansion tank will have minimum and maximum level markings. Fill only to the minimum level mark with the engine cold.

My sunfire overheats and leaks out overflow everytime i drivee it.i changed water pump,thermostat the fan is working fine and had a water pressure test done last mth

THE COOLANT LEVEL SHOULD BE AT THE FULL HOT LINE.ALLOW THE ENGINE TO COOL UNTIL THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IS REACHED THEN CHECK THE COOLANT LEVEL IT SHOULD BE AT OR ABOVE THE FULL COLD LINE.ADD MORE COOLANT IF NECESSARY. Chrysler & Jeep Cooling System & HVAC Service: Every car make has its quirks, and Chrysler and Jeep vehicles are no exception. In researching this article, we found several examples of heater problems in these vehicles that seem to be fairly common.

On 2001 and 2002 Sebring Sedan, Sebring Convertible and Stratus Sedan, plus 1993 to 2002 Chrysler Concorde, LHS, New Yorker and 300M, Eagle Vision and Dodge Intrepid models with V6 engines, customers may complain their engine is overheating, or the heater is putting out little or no heat.

Chrysler Technical Service Bulletin 07-002-02 says the problem can be caused by a low coolant level in the cooling system. On these vehicles, air trapped inside the cooling system can displace coolant when the system is refilled. The radiator and coolant reservoir may appear to be full, but there still may be air inside the heater core and heater hoses. This will create a low coolant level that may lead to overheating and low heater output. The bulletin provides a special fill procedure to eliminate the trapped air so the cooling system can be completely filled.

The procedure goes as follows:
1. Obtain Chrysler special tool 8195 (Cooling System Filling Aid). The tool looks like a funnel and attaches onto the filler neck (just as a regular pressure cap does). But it also has a hose clip.
2. Attach the filling aid tool to the cooling system filler neck. Use the clip to pinch off the overflow hose attached to the fill neck. Attach a 4-6' long 1/4" ID clear hose to the bleed valve. Put the end of the hose into a clean container (to prevent coolant from spilling onto the accessory drive belts).
3. Open the cooling system air bleed valve before any coolant is added. If you do not do this, air can remain trapped inside the system and you won't get all the air out. On 1998 and later models with 2.7L engine, the valve is located on the water outlet connector at the front of the engine. On 3.2L and 3.5L engines, the valve is located on the lower intake manifold, left of center under the upper intake manifold. On 1993-'97 models with 3.3L and 3.5L engines, the valve is on the thermostat housing.
4. Pour a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water into the large side of the filling aid funnel. Use distilled, deionized or reverse-osmosis purified water, not ordinary tap water, which may contain salt or minerals that could contaminate the coolant.
5. Slowly fill the cooling system through the large side of the filling aid. Watch the hose connected to the bleed valve. When a steady stream of coolant comes out of the hose, close the bleed valve and continue filling to the top of the filling aid.
6. On 1993-'97 models, place a small, clean container below the end of the overflow hose. Then remove the clip from the overflow hose. Any excess coolant in the filling aid will now drain into the overflow section of the coolant bottle or into the container.
7. On 1993-'97 models, remove the reservoir and recycle the excess coolant.
8. Remove the filling aid from the fill neck. Make sure the filler neck and cap are clean, then replace the pressure cap on the coolant bottle.

Note: 1998 and later coolant bottles have two chambers. Coolant will normally only be in the inboard (smaller) of the two. The outboard chamber is only to recover coolant in the event of an overheat and should normally be empty - except for the coolant drained from the filling aid. This coolant will be drawn back into the pressurized side of the cooling system over time.

overheating can be caused by several things:
1. thermostat stuck closed.
2. low coolant level
3. leaking coolant
4. fan that does not turn on to cool radiator
5. FAN DOES NOT TURN ON WHEN A/C IS TURNED ON.

Van still runs but no heater & the engine overheats,the temp goes high very fast. the fan is still working


It sounds to me like your coolant level is too low. Check that first. If it is low top it up and let the van run with the heater on. You will probably have to add coolant more than once to get the system full. If the coolant level is full then you need to replace the thermostat. If it doesn't open then coolant can't circulate through the radiator and cool off. Hope this helps.

How to change water pump on 1995 3.5 dodge intrepid. it is trying to freeze up and pulls engine down and runs hot


turn off radio so you wont lose code.disconnect negative battery cable.remove drive belt.get a drain pan to catch coolant.place it under the radiator.then open the radiator drain on the lower right side of radiator.then remove coolant pressure cap and open thermostat bleed valve.BESURE TO PUT COOLANT SOME WHERE SAFE .BECAUSE KIDS AND PETS WILL DRANK IT.know you going to have to move the timing belt.besure to get your engine on TDC AT NUMBER 1 FIRING POSITION.REMOVE THE WATER PUMP BOLTS.AND PUMP.THROW AWAY THE O-RING SEAL.CLEAN GASKET SURFACE DO NOT SCRATCH.INSTALL NEW O-RING DIP IT IN COOLANT.DONT GET DIRT OR GREASE ON IT OR IT WILL LEAK.THEN YOU PUT .PUMP AND O-RING TO THE ENGINE BLOCK.INSTALL THE MOUNTING BOLTS.TORQUE TO 105 INCH POUNDS.THEN YOUR TURN PUMP WITH HANDS MAKE ITS NOT TO TIGHT AND CLEAR. My 1997 olds aurora doesnt overheat while idiling just while driving says low coolant ive changed thermosat hoses what could this be


The coolant level sensor in the coolnat reservior is shorted out . The coolant level when driving is circulating fine . The coolant must be going just past the sensor and triggering it off.
