Is it necessary to remove the cv axle to remove the transmission from a 2001 ford escort?

interesting challenge! if the axle nut is not rounded there are some powerful electric impact guns out there, the other side of the street, the transmission once unbolted and the axle pryed loose and there is enough room between sub frame and engine it will come out, automatic is easier but heavier... heat wrench would be nice (torch)

It really sounds like one of the cv joints has failed. Even though boots are intact joint could be broke inside-just double check.

I have 2001 ford focus and on passenger removaing axle there"s a shaft coming out of trans and then to axle does axle come off shaft or does shaft have to come out too

Either way. You can use a slide-hammer to pull the axle out of the transmission,or you could remove the CV boot, and remove the circlip from the CV joint./

Cv joint removal

CV joint removal involves taking the axle (half shaft) out. You will need to take the axle nut off and it will require a large breaker bar or an air impact gun as they are installed with LOTS of torque. Then you will have to seperate the lower control arm so that you can swing the wheel assembly out far enough to remove the axle. Once you have rmoved it from the wheel end, you can remove it from the transmission end,

Need to replace a front passenger cv axle shaft in my escort zx2 and i cant figure our how to do it

  1. Jack the car up
  2. Remove the wheel
  3. Loosen the axle nut at the center of the hub
  4. Remove the lower ball joint and tie rod from the hub. Disconnect the strut from the hub.
  5. As you're swinging the hub out of the way, tap the center of the axle stub with a hammer a few times to loosen it, then push it back out of the hub, toward the transmission.
  6. Insert a pry bar between the transmission and inboard CV stub, and gently pry outward in a couple places, until the axle pops out.
  7. Place a drain pan under the inboard stub, and remove it.
  8. Installation is the reverse of removal.

I'm preparing to remove front right axle shaft (Cv half shaft) in a 1998 ford Escort zx2 with ABS and Auto trans. Is it held in the transmission by a spring ring or a snap ring?

It is held in by a spring ring. You need a good strong pry bar and you position it between the hub of the axel and the case of the trans and **** hard pulling it out. It sometimes is seated well, but keep trying. It will fight you sometimes.

Hope this helps.

CV JOINT

Remove the brake caliper and then remove the brake rotor, remove the large axle nut on the end, undo the lower bolt from the strut/spring assy and swing the assy out of the way as you pull the splined axle out of the the brake rotor hub, once the axle is free with a swift **** pull the axle from the transmission, it will most likely be a bitc.. to get out of the trans, but keep jerking until the internal snap-ring releases.
