Question about 1994 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer

1 Answer

1994 chevy blazer overheated and lost power

My son was driving the blazer and engine began to overheat and it stalled. He got it going again to get it to a safe location, but it wouldn't go over 20-30 mph. The oil had been a little low and he had added some oil earlier. The car now starts, oil is not milky, but there is a clacking noise when you hit the accelerator. I wondered if this could be a water pump issue. The radiator, temp sensor, fuel and oil pump have been replaced in the past year, along with the transmission.

Sounds to me he now has major engine damage.

To be honest I'm surprised it runs at all.

The problem could have been a water pump failure but once it overheated and he continued

to drive it he has caused major damage to the engine.

What probably happened was the engine overheated so severely that the viscosity of the oil

broke down causing it to damage a main bearing ect

The first thing to do is check for proper compression to see if it has blown a

head gasket or warped the head, About 30% of the time there will not be water in the oil

or oil in the water this is because depending on the area affected it could have warped or blown

the area around the exhaust port .

I would suggest the vehicle not be started unnecessarily

You can rent a compression checker at just about any auto parts store .

The compression should be checked by first removing the ECM fuse so

the car wont fire or add fuel then remove all spark plugs and insert the compression

tester into one of the spark plug holes.

Then with the throttle fully open turn the engine over 3 to 4 times and check the compression

Should be 150 to 180 psi if its very low like 80 or below you have either

a bad gasket or warped head .

I need to say again Do Not run this vehicle you will do irrefutable damage .

old post , no year car, 1989 to 2002
there are 3 engines, 2 up to 1998. all made by toyota
overheating is it,
forget all else. FIND reason for overheating, coolant lost top list.
if loosing coolant that is #1 above all else. find cause.
but
overheating KILLS all ENgines. if not cured fast.
warps heads
is it pinging? that too kills engines.
your engine should never overheat unless it has cooling problems or.

unless the head is warped now, it will overheat, due to coolant loss
is it loosing coolant every hour or day?
CRANKING ALL ENGINES THAT DONT START DRAINS ALL BATTERIES, IT'S NOT a SYMPTOM IT'S NORMAL FOR NOSTARTS. (starter sucks 100 amps from battery every try)

id do a compression test first.
look for coolant in these spots
1: pavement below car.
2: passenger foot wells. (heat core leaks)
3: low radiator at neck cold show no coolant seen there.
4: in the a/t transmission, turns AFT to chocolate milk.
5: water in the engine oil pan, and or the reverse.
oil in the radiator, or side tank.
do all you can to not overheat any engine, and keep the repair bill like 1/3 or less. of BOOM

Engine Overheating

no other signs just the dash gauge, upset? what if its fibbing?
no steam, no water to ground overflowing overflow tank.
no engine pinging. no lost power, from engine, SIGNS. are key. here.
Did you consider using a IR pyro gun for $20 and find if it is really overheating,? the gun also finds clogged rad tubes, childs play like.
are you loosing coolant. that is when cold actually off the cap
and look down deep in the RAD tank? This matters, most.

which engine,? 2.5,4L or bigger?
what does no coolant going into...., mean.?
it's a loop system.
first off, we need to know does it overheat only parked?
or can you drive it from cold and keep it going and it never overheats
moving fast.?
if the engine stays cool 180F, moving fast , then your stop. and NOW it it overheats, that means the fan is dead.
or a marginal radiator, (Pyro gun to rescue)
