The electrical connections and the 2 bolts holding the starter are removed. I just can not "snake it out" of the car through the botton? Do I need to removel something, like the cross brace?

  • rogerh845 May 14, 2009

Greg, You first posting was correct. I had to squeeze it out through the bottom and mash it around a rubber damper on the front wheel drive shaft. The Toyota engine size is 1.6 liter. Thanks

simple rule...if it's in your way, remove it. likely faster than pulling pushing and twisting all day with no results.

Have you disconnect the wires going to the solenoid?
Please disconnect the battery prior to working on the starter for your own safety.

Below are the step by step instructions per Chilton Automotive Guide for 1997 Corolla:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly (with hose).
  3. Disconnect all the wiring from the starter terminals.
  4. Remove the starter mounting bolts. Remove the starter.
My guess is its the air cleaner assembly that's in your way. There's no mention of a cross brace or guard that should be in your way. Best of luck!

    Sorry, got the wrong motor, here are the instructions. You have the catalytic converter in the way;

    3.8L & 1996-98 5.7L Engines

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

    3. Remove the catalytic converter.

    4. For
the 3.8L engine, remove the starter shield by unfastening the shield
bolts/screws and nut attaching the shield to the engine.

    5. Unfasten
the starter motor bolt/screw and stud from the starter and support the
starter while you tag and detach or unscrew the wiring from the starter.

    6. Lower the starter motor from the engine.

Why is my car trying to start when i attach the

Sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck on, most likely need to replace the starter, sometimes what can be done is tap the solenoid with a wrench or a small hammer and it may come loose, if it stops i would still recommend replacing the starter because it will happen again 9/10 times. Also check the wiring to the starter and make sure the start wire is not shorted or installed improperly. If there is constant voltage at the smaller start signal wire, the problem is somewhere in the wiring or the keyswitch.

Where is the starter on a 1997 toyota corola

under the intake manifold, airbox must be removed to get to the top 14 mm bolt that is hidden behind the wiring harness bracket on the top of the trans. 2nd 14mm bolt is accessed from under the car and is right above the axle. if you remove the r/s splash shield you should be able to sneak the starter out from there by kind of sliding it along the axle if you don't want to remove the axle itself. it is a little tight but it will come out that way
