Testing fuel prsure problem on 98 chevy 1500

I have a fuel tester that conects between the the fuel filter and the line. but when I connect it for some reason the fuel pump will not engage to test it is like there is a relay shutting it down. I am trying to determine if I have a bad fuel pump, sensor or something else going on. It statred running rough and staring hard the other day then it just would not restart. if I spray a starting fluid in the throttle body it will start and sometimes stay runing even restart for a while. Help!

Most probably fuel tester. Codes being different from one Co. to another, simply ask the technician to replace the fuel tester and get installed by any trained personnel who is also responsible to have them accepted as the default with the help of a PC. If its not done properly, these sensors will start a chain reaction * finally stop the engine to prevent further damage..........sodeep

Are the rate of flow of the fuel, in this same as that of the fuel filter, if not the tester has to changed which as the same rate of flow. But the engine's demand is never constant and if the tester is able to keep up with it(demand) & thus fail to give you the reading. However if there was an expansion sump after the fuel tester, such that its flowrate to the engine is always as demanded by the engine and is irrespective of the flow rate of the fuel tester. The device is very simple and resembles an old time FUEL FILTER. It will act as a buffer so that engine always gets the right amount of fuel at all times.............................sodeep

When your turn the key on but do not try to start the truck the fuel pump will only turn on for 2 seconds and you will only have power for 2 seconds .it sounds like you have a bad fuel pump ,try smaking on the gas tank.

IT is loosing prime if it ran when you put starting fluid in the throttle body. and you heard the pump run for a few then put a new pump in just because you here it run does not mean you have fuel pressure.

Fuel pump works, new filter, gas is coming out past filter but not getting to the Compression tester. I changed the vacum valve on the gas rail. What next?

The presence of fuel isn't enough.

Fuel must be delivered in sufficient quantity at a sufficient pressure and this can only be checked with a fuel pressure test and a volume delivery test.

I averaged 9-10 MPG in my 98 w/5.7 l vortec.
cap, rotor, plugs, wires, O2 sensors, fuel filter, and fresh air filter are the best way to peak MPG's

Sounds like the fuel pump is going or gone out and it trys to start but it wont turn all the way over

By what your stating, that it starts and dies every time, It seems to be fuel related. You need to perform a fuel pressure check. You will need a pressure tester, one that would at least be able to read pressure to a maximum of 150 lbs of pressure. Although you really only need about 50-60 pounds of pressure to maintain proper fuel injector operation. There is a test port located on the fuel rail where you would conect the pressure tester. The test port is usually located on the drivers side of the engine near the rear section coming up from the firewall. Unscrew the pressure port cap if its still there and connect your tester. But also keep in mind you may have fuel pressure of some sort in the rail so be careful. While the tester is screwed to the test port you want to cycle the ignition key on and read pressure, you may want to repeat this several times. You must have at least 50 pounds of pressure, if so it should start. If you are losing pressure while your maintaining a visual check on the tester it could also be a faulty pressure regulator/fuel pump or even a rubber hose connection inside the fuel tank that connects the fuel pump to the fuel line. If you have any questions Im here to help. Thanks for using FIXYA

98 chevy 1500 starts and then shuts right off have replaced fuel pump and filter ,crank sensor, cam sensor ,oil sen. coil, ign.mod and PCM

On some chevys the oil pressure sending unit closes the circuit to continue the fuel pump to run after start. In the event of a wreck ,the car stops running thus no oil pressure thus turns off power to the fuel pump .A safety to help prevent fires. When you first start the car, the computer turns on the fuel pump for about 20 seconds just enough time to start and allow the oil pressure sending unit to close the circuit to allow it to continue running. when the car car has NO oil pressure or the sending unit fails ,it will start then shut down..as many times as you try to start. replace the oil pressure sending unit and secure a good conection. Truck runs for two seconds an shut down i changed fuel pump an filter and it still shuts down but it only stay running when i put gas down in the throttle body i had a 1996 chevy 1500 i was wondering can...

No, the fuel regulator from a 96 will not fit a 98. The 98 is a vortec and i believe the 96 is TBI. You are on the right track though, but the fuel regulator is attached to the fuel injector spider and is one unit inside the upper intake. It is relative easy to replace just takes some time.
