1994 Isuzu Pickup Tailgate Won't unlatch

Hi, I went to open the tailgate yesterday and felt something give inside. The latch handle moves but does nothing useful.

There is no access from the rear of the tg, the latch handle assembly is riveted rather solidy to the tailgate and it's hard to get to the latches themselves.

I have:
1) prodded around between the tailgate and the bed but can't get the latch to release.
2) pulled the taillights to get a wrench in to undo the bolts attaching the body side of the latch, but as the bolt is undone the head is blocked by the tailgate flange..actually my gear wrench stuck in there...lol.
3) Next I plan to dremel slots into the end of the latch bolts so I can unscrew them from the taillight side.
4) I'm hoping once I get the tailgate down and remove the tailgate part of the lock it will be obvious how to fix, but not sure if it will be possible to work through the latch openings of the tailgate.

So...wondering if there is an easier way to get the tailgate down and next how do I fix it?

Appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks!
George in Ottawa.

L want to completely remove the tailgate of a 1998 Chevrolet S10 pickup.

Really bad idea. This will cost you lower fuel mileage, danger of cargo loss. Mythbusters have run tests proving that the aero effects with the tailgate up form a cushion of air in the bed which reduces drag. None of my business I know.

Broken tailgate latch

UHOH, might try a bent butter knife or other bent metal and slip it in the crack between the tailgate and the side panel on the side that the rod from the handle came off on, but if it came off both sides you'll have to work both latch at the same time which will require the help of a buddy unless your pretty acrobatic. You have to push in the catch or catches that are not retracting to unlatch the tailgate. Good luck if all else fails you'll need to take it to a body shop. Some trucks you can get to the rods to the latches trough the hole where the handle mounts with some needle nose and pull the rods if they came loose at the middle.

2000 GMC Sierra tailgate won't unlatch on right

You should be able to pry it off. Be careful, if you break the latches when it pops off you will have to replace it. Look on the opposite side of the tailgate and there should be a plate screwed to the tailgate. It is almost the size of the tailgate.

Tailgate will not open; handle will not move

Either ,something is binding inside the tailgate, or broken.
You can get to the mechanism from the inside panel of the tailgate-- by
removing the screws that down the inside panel.
Once you remove the panel you should be able to open the tailgate by
pulling on the thin cable to unlatch the latches from both ends of the tailgate and a good look at the handle mechanism will tell you what wrong.
Good Luck.

You may have to pull the latch, the latches inside the tailgate got loose or the tailgate is bent inward take a sluge hammer and hit it on the oppisite side to make flush!
