Question about 1996 GMC Sonoma

1 Answer

No power to ignition or fuel system

I have a 96 GMC Jimmy 4x4. It has no power to the ignition system nor the fuel pump. I've swapped fuses and haven't had any luck with either system.
Could this be a faulty ground wire or fusable link ? If so where are those located ?

I have power to everything else, i.e radio, window's ect. The motor cranks normally but when I pulled a wire from the coil there is no spark to it.

There should be a relay to the fuel pump....sometimes located under the hood by the firewall.......try looking for it......"that one might run two both of them"....

in case of the ignition have you checked the inginition key cylinder.....? does it move alright......can you try to crank it and will it give you power to run the radio?

Where is ecm on 95 gmc jimmy

The ECM on the jimmy, is located on the passenger side fender well by the overflow tank. But before replace the ECM, inspect the fuel pump and fuel pump relay. The ECM sends power to the fuel pump relay and if the relay has gone bad will cause the fuse to blow which will kill the the power to the ECM, in turn kill the electrical power to the ignition system.

Start by removing the fuel pump relay and swap it with another relay and see if the fuse will blow again, if is does. Disconnect the fuel sending unit wire harness at the frame and see if the fuse blows again, if the fuse stays good. Chances are your fuel pump has gone bad or the fuel filter is dirty/clogged causing your fuel pump to draw more amp and will need to be replaced or the wire harness from the frame to the sending unit has a short which is common on older Jimmy's.

Here is a link to the electrical harness throughout the Jimmy.

Fuel pump not working

You may have a defective ignition starter switch, it is common in this year. When the switches go bad you loose power to the fuel pump circuit that power the relay.

We put a new fuel pump in daughters 96 GMC Jimmy SLE and sometimes it just quits running then starts back up after sitting. Is this model fuel injected, could a spider be bad, could it be a vacuum problem,...

It could be a fuel problem but it sounds more like an ignition problem. Check to make sure you have spark after it stalls. If not you have a problem with an ignition component. I it does make sure there is fuel pressure.

Immobiliser not allowing motor to start, is it connected to fuel system? Motor turns over, but no fuel getting to throttle body. 96 model, single port

Its your fuel pump or your filter is completly cloged off. The way the fuel electrical system works is even if the relay blows the oil pressure sending unit acts as a back power system its a split ciricut and runs off fuse # 9 in the fuse box. You could try removeing the filter and see if the pump is opperating you could also check the fuse and relay. But relisticly these pumps olny last about 10 years and also have a problem with the wireing to the pump its not the correct wire to it and there is an up grade kit that comes with the new pump well good luck

96 GMC Jimmy starts okay but dies after about 10 minutes. It will start again after sitting for awhile, then dies again. Have changed the fuel filter and pump...any other ideas?

If you have replaced the fuel pump and filter I would still check the pump pressure when it wants to die. Check for any trouble codes in the system also.
