Soundc like the harmoniac blancer has seperated,to check thie make sure the car is off!!!
open the hood, see if you can move the altenator pully by hand ,if the harmonac balencer is bad you will be able too turn it by hand real easy,
too fix it , you can either replace it or weld it!!!!
either way it has too come off and its an easy fix!!!!!

I have a 1995 chevy lumina sedan, 3.1 v-6 engine. suddenly started knocking LOUDLY when running. (sounded like when an engine has no oil in it.) i checked oil, which is fine, other than just dirty. i...

As for oil not milky , this could still have a crack or bad headgasket just going through the exaust port in the head. As for the loud KNOCK may be your oil pump quit working, Really hard to say, Hopefully it's not ready for overhaul. Best of luck to you.

When the fly wheel is bad does it knock

Yes they can make a loud knocking noise, this only applies to automatic transmission flywheels known as "Flex Plates" the noise is caused by the Flex Plate being cracked.

Engine makes loud knocking noise that seems to be coming from the very top of the engine. I should note that this car has 175000 miles on it

Knocking noises from the overhead cam may be making the noise in question. Maybe a bad bearing on the camshaft or a spun cam.

175,000 mi. is a lot of miles for an engine, it may have been over revved at some point, or suffered from oil starvation or dirty oil with a prior owner.

1995 chevy lumina makes terible loud noise like rods knocking when started. It has oil and water in it. what could be the problem?

it could still be a rod even if its full of oil. carbon build up inside the engine can cause a knocking sound but its probably a rod. does it go away after it starts?? if it only does it while starting, it could be leaking water in a cylinder after you cut it off and the next time you're cranking it, its trying to compress the water
