Air conditioner failing

The air conditioning in my 1999 passat 1.8 went out yesterday. it was working fine and all of a sudden it stopped, i turned it off and later on with the fan off it started blowing cold air again. it went out again and now it just does not work. when i hit the A/C button on the control panel, the A/C light does not come on. Any suggestions?

You need to refill the A/C. It works on pressure in the system if its below operating pressure it will not work at all. Buy a refill kit and follow instruction.

Possibly. Check for the proper amount of freon in the system. There are pressure sensing switches that stop the compressor as a safety measure.

Air conditioning stopped working suddenly would not respond when switched on

Could be a number of possible issues. A sudden loss of freon, a faulty pressure switch or relay, and so on.
Someone would need to find out if the compressor has power and then proceed from there.

When driving the vehicle will die, if it sets for a little bit it will restart. This all started a year ago, when we turned on the air conditioning, before that it would run fine, but it seemed only w

If the compressor is failing, or there is a restriction in the ac system, the compressor could put a heavy load on the belt and the engine.
Normally the ac clutch would slip and not kill the engine, but anything is possible.
I t could be something else electrical too.

Check the gas pressure, if it low it inhibits the relay that energises the compressor.

Air-conditioning not icy cold inside my VW Passat TDI 1996

chances are if you system was serviced by modern equipment then they would have pulled a vacuum before recharging .. that would eliminate moisture in the system .. the evaporator is inside your heater box .. you cant see it .. the condenser is the radiator like device in front of your engine cooling radiator ..

if the system is changed properly and still does not work or works intermittantly . then there is a good chance that the air conditioner clutch electronic module is bad .. thats a relay like device located on the drivers side behind the dash .. you have to snap off the dash side panel .. its normally hidden by the door .. inside that is the fuse panel and behind that is the relays/electronic modules .. the one that operates the air conditioner clutch is marked 384 .. there are other possibilities depending on your a more precise description of the problem ..

Air condition suddenly blowing uncooled air.radiator full. worked great until yesterday. could it be thermostat?

The thermostat and radiator are part of the engine cooling system, not part of the air condition system. Chances are, the A/C system is low on refrigerant. The system has a low pressure switch that prevents the air conditioner compressor from being damaged with the Freon is low.

You can purchase a can or R134a refrigerant at any parts store and try recharging the system yourself….the basic instructions can be found here:

AIR CONDITION STARTS ON RANDOMLY AFTER SWITCH ON IN PASSAT 1998

first, of course, make sure the system is not low on refrigerant (r134a) (check low side pressure) ...if thats ok then there is a relay (electronic module) that fails frequently .. the nature of this failure is that at times the air conditioner wont work at all .. then other times it works fine .. eventually it will faill completely ..if that sounds like your trouble then you can get at the relay by removing the panel at the left side of the dash (normally hidden by the door) (snaps off) ..you will see the fuse panel and behind that the relays .. the relay is marked "384" .. it costs about $50 .. i have been able to repair them and have taken photos to help in that repair if you are electronically handy ..make sure you observe how it comes out .. its difficult to figure out which way it plugs in unless you mark which way is up .. ..
