Question about GMC C1500

Do not know if my crankshaft and camshaft are timed correctly.

I have a 1997 GMC 1500 5.0L 4x4. I just replaced the head gasgets over the weekend. The truck will start at the turn of the key with no problem, but it shakes a little as it runs. I checked the vacume which was 20. How do I make sure the crankshaft and the camshaft are timed correctly?

    I did not have the timing chain off at all. I will check the compression and see what I find. By low hole do you mean low compression? What are good compression ranges?

    Did you have the timing chain off for some reason? I'd be inclined to do a compression test before worrying about anything else. A low hole will cause a rough idle.

    had front crankshaft seal removed and replaced crankshaft damper. two days later the truck just died, not turning over.

My best guess is that ya crossed plug wires 5 and 7, or mis-adjusted a lifter, or one of the head gaskets didn't seal, but here goes.....If that engine pulls 20" of vacuum at idle, and it's STEADY, (Did the needle drop a couple points regularly or hold at 20 during idle?) I don't see how you can have an engine miss, UNLESS you attached the vacuum gauge to 1/2 of the intake manifold. OK, let me explain here, your intake is split into 2 parts, one side feeds cylinders 1 and 7 on the driver's side and 4 and 6 on the passenger's. The other part of the manifold feeds 3 and 5 on driver's side and 2 and 8 on passenger's. If you plugged the vacuum gauge into a manifold RUNNER instead of the BOTTOM of the CARB, you only read half the engine. Here is a quick check for a bad cylinder (low compression). Ground the coil wire or pull the wiring plug to disable the coil. Crank the engine and listen for it to speed up. Each time it spins past the bad cyl (low compression) the starter will speed up, just for a split second.

On your distribuer find the number 1 wire then mark it on the dist. remove the cap then turn the crank intill you get to tdc(top dead center ),put the mark on the crank pully at 0 if you have it right the rotor button should be at the mark you put on the dist. , note: you might have to go around a few times

PO102 and PO340 on 1997 GMC Jimmy


PO102 = mass airflow circuit low. Means there's a problem with the mass airflow sensor or circuit. Could be the sensor is disconnected, dirty, or faulty. PO340 = camshaft position sensor circuit. Could be ground wire disconnection, camshaft position sensor failed, PCM is failing, or even the crankshaft position sensor has failed. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

Resetting timing after replacing head gasket


Do you have the timing belt on and the tensioner set correct? If so, just rotate the crankshaft around until the notch on the crank sprocket is lined up with the pointer on the oil puimp housing (TDC). Now the camshaft sprocket's notch or pointer should be at the top and exactly in line with the mark on the rear timing belt cover. If it's not correct, you'll have to release tension on the belt, remove it, and set the camshaft to the mark. But before you do that, turn the crankshaft back (counterclockwise) just three notches. Then you can turn the cam to line up, then return crank to line up, and continue with belt installation, setting the tension, and re-checking timing marks after rotating the crankshaft a couple of revolutions. Once you know the timing is set to TDC, no further timing adjustments are possible, because the computer controls timing. I don't know how important it is, but just to let you know: Chrysler recommends after belt removal or replacement that one perform the "crankshaft and camshaft relearn alignment procedure" using the DRB scan tool (Chrysler's scanner device) or equivalent scan tool.
And the firing order on all four cylinder engines is the same: 1 3 4 2.

My 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse wont pass emissions because trouble code P1390. I dont know what this means? Ive researched it everyway I know? My check engine light wont come on at all? Help anyone? Thanks!

Mitsubishi DTC P1390 - Timing Belt Skipped 1 Tooth or More.
Probable Causes,
-Timing belt improperly installed
-Camshaft position sensor improperly installed
-Camshaft position sensor connector improperly connected
-Crankshaft position sensor connector improperly connected
-Camshaft's relative position not relearned after one of the following have been serviced: Camshaft, Camshaft sprocket, timing belt tension-er, cylinder head, head gasket, crankshaft sprocket, crankshaft cylinder block or the PCM.

Sounds like something to do with the timing belt it self. You can go to any Autozone or Checker and ask for a code reader (they will let you use it for free) and it will show this code again. You can also reset the cars computer with the code reader to see if it comes back with the same code.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the front cover as previously detailed.
  3. Place the No. 1 piston at TDC of the compression stroke so that the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets are in alignment (see illustration).
  4. Loosen the timing chain tensioner nut as far as possible without actually removing it.
  5. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts and remove the sprocket and chain together. If the sprocket does not slide from the camshaft easily, a light blow with a soft mallet at the lower edge of the sprocket will dislodge it.
  6. Using a suitable gear puller, remove the crankshaft sprocket. To install:
  7. Press the crankshaft sprocket back onto the crankshaft.
  8. Install the timing chain over the camshaft sprocket and then around the crankshaft sprocket. Make sure that the marks on the two sprockets are in alignment (see illustration). Lubricate the thrust surface with Molykote® or its equivalent.
  9. Align the dowel in the camshaft with the dowel hole in the sprocket and then install the sprocket onto the camshaft. Use the mounting bolts to draw the sprocket onto the camshaft and then tighten to 66–68 ft. lbs. (91–95 Nm).
  10. Lubricate the timing chain with clean engine oil. Tighten the chain tensioner.

Dear Friend
Removal: Support engine: remove -engine mounting, auxiliary drive belt, water pump pulley, crankshaft pully bots & crankshaft pully, timing belt covers....turn crankshaft to TDC on No 1 cylinder, ensure crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket & balancer shaft sprocket timing marks lighned. Pls note: Timing marks on camshaft sprockets should align with cylinder head uppter face, dowl pins on camshaft sprockets should face downwards....Slacken tensioner botl. Move tensioner away from belt & tighten bolt.
Remove: automatic tensioner unit bolts, automatic tensioner unit, timing belt, crankshaft bolt, crankshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket guide washer...slacken balancer shaft belt rensioner bolt, move tensioner away from belt & lightly tighten bolt...Remove balancer shaft belt.

Installation:
ensure timeing marks aligned.Note: Timing marks on camshaft sprockets ahould align with cylinder head upper face, exhaust sprocket mark is on recess but inlet sprocket mark is on tooth. To check oil pump sprocket positionded sorrectly: remove blanking plug from cylinder block, insert 8mm diameter Phillips screwdriver in hole. ensure screwdriver is inserded 60mm from face of cylinder block. If screwdriveer can only be inserted 20mm-turn oil pump sprocket 360". Inset screwdiver again.
Fit balancer shaft delt in anti-clockwise direction starting at crandkshaft sprocket....Slacken balancer shaft belt tensioner notl, turn tensioner clockwise to tension belt. Tighten bolt to 15-22 Nm... Applu thump pressure to belt at tentioner, belt should deflect 5-7mm. If not: Repeat tensioning procedure.... Install - chankshaft sprocket guide washer & crankshaft sprocket.
Thighten crankshaft centre bolt, tightening torque:110-130Nm. Please note, ensure crankshaft sprocket guide washer is fittet correctly. oil threads & contact face crankshaft botl before fitting.
