Yes check out autozone.com and look up your model in the manuals. and look in the diagnostic section. they usually can tell you what to do and what the codes mean. or it will tell you to use a scan tool.

Your '89 has no OBD plug in. To retrieve codes, turn key on, off, on, off, on, off, and then leave on. (Cycle key 3 times on-off, then leave in ON, do not start engine.) Codes will begin to flash on the check engine light (cel). All codes are only 2 digits. Probably see a code 12-one long flash and two short flashes-code 12 is normal, disregard it. If you have to, keep repeating the codes until you get them all. Post them here, or google the codes for help.

The light on D keeps flicking when the gear is in drive and the car is being driven

non hybrid answer.....?
The TCM (tranny brain) read the operators guide. (open glove box , grab it) its free this guide. get one.
it tell you D1 flashes, and means tranny MALF.

On some cars, after 1996 the Tranny fail codes are reported
via the ECU, using any scan tool. ever use a scan tool?
see P070x codes....
are you in USA? if yes, then all scan tools work, here. for ECU.

The FSM has over 100 pages on , on car tranny diagnosis
ever seen that?

page 178 , see that, page? below. why not burn this to CD or memory stick and put it back in the glove box for next time.?

FSM?
honda sells it.
see alldata dot com, or mitchels.
used FSM on fleabay ,dirt cheap.
or?

and OBD2 scan tool is like $9 today 2013
and this car has 100s of DTCs for just the tranny
P07xx 8xx and 9xx, one of the largest set of code of any car ever made, it blows the mind, how many.;
so connect the tool and see the codes.
DTC's diagnostic trouble codes.

List of code error for honda accord sm4

Hi,

If your 1989 Accord has an EFI engine, then your PGM computer (under the passenger floor carpet) will flash fault codes, through the LED light on the computer.

For self-diagnostic procedure, turn the key to ON and observe the LED flash sequence.

The following table shows the early LED type codes:

Cannot locate obd port

Your car is NOT OBD II. that was mandated for 1996 and later. Your car requires a DRB II scan tool ( or equivalent)..Good news is that you can use the MIL ( check engine light) to retrieve the codes.

  1. Cycle the ignition key to ON , OFF , ON , OFF , ON within 5 seconds.
  2. Count the number of times the MIL (check engine light) on the instrument panel flashes on and off. The number of flashes represents the trouble code. There is a slight pause between the flashes representing the first and second digits of the code. Longer pauses separate the individual two digit trouble code.
If it flashes 4 times and then pauses and flashes 5 times that is a 45. There will be a long pause between codes if there is more than 1 stored. After all the codes are flashed it will flash a 55. If you can get the code(s) and post(reply) I can look it up for you.

Since the 91 model is obd1 there is no scan tool that can be hook up to it,but on the right kickpanel there is a two pin connector you can jump with a simple tool like a paper clip with the key on and the engine not running and this will cause the the mil to blink your code you will get a two different blinks a long one and a short one you combine both to get the code.example two long ones followed by one short is a code 21.

The D4 light blinking indicates there is a diagnostic trouble code stored. When a malfunction occurs, the vehicle computer records the code and stores it,then flashes the D4 light to let you KNOW there is a problem. On pre OBD 2 Honda vehicles,1995 and back,Hondas are manual code read, which means you do NOT hook up a scan tool as there is no scan port. The passenger side front kick panel is removed, and a blue 2 wire connector located.Use a jumper wire to short out the connector, then turn the ignition key on,with engine off,not running. This throws the computer into self diagnostic mode, and the D4 or "s" light will flash a series of flashes. The flashes have to be counted, and written down. For example,2 flashes followed by 4 flashes would be a code 24.The code is then looked up with reference material for a description and diagnostic route.Every diagnostic trouble code, has a diagnostic route, for repairing the problem.Again, this informtion, the diagnostic route,is available in reference material from pay sources like All Data Online. After the repair is made, the battery is disconnected to clear the code.Good luck.
