2000 Hyundai Sonata front end wobbles.

I just had the upper control arms replaced and the wheels aligned. I also had the stabilizer struts and shocks replaced. Just recently I've noticed the car starts pulling to the right. And there's a wobble in the front. I thought maybe the wheels needed balancing, but the wobble is to severe. Any ideas?

    Ok. I had the wheels rotated and a nut tightned on the upper control arm. The steering is amazingly tight, which is good. But the wheels wobbles still. It's like if you're starting out and get to about 30-40 mph the wheels do this wobble dance. At higher speeds it kind of balances out, but the steering wheel pulls to the right. It's weird though. I just had the wheels balanced when the control arms were replaced. I'm at a loss. And Thank you.

    Well I went to the Hyundai dealer and they replaced the subframe because of the recall. They returned the car and it still pulled hard to the right and wobbled like crazy. They told me to go back to whoever did the alignment and have it redone. First I went upstate over the weekend. 250 miles with the car wobbling and jiggling. I put myself thru an incredable amount of stress and worry. I got back Monday and went back to Pepboys to see if they could help me, but they told me no because my warrenty for the control arms and wheel alignment had expired(over 90 days since it was installed). I thought I was stuck, but I went back to my regular mechanic and told him everything that happened. He put the car on the lift to check what you wrote me about, but before that happened he called me over and showed me the two front tires. Both tires had a long warped ridge in them. The right tire had one on the outside and the left on had it on the inside. Plus the right one had a rip in the rubber and the steel belt was actually coming out of the tire. I was told to get two new tires for the front. I did that and I could not believe the difference. The car feels like a new car! It takes bumps like a pillow again! It does'nt pull in any direction anymore. And it does'nt burn that much gas again! I'm in love with my car again! I thank God that nothing bad happened during my ignorance. And I hope this can help someone else. Thank you.

Put the front tires on the back and see if it changes.
alot of times,if the suspension is defective it wears the tires uneven ,out of round.
check and make sure the wheel nuts are tight and torqued properly.
alot of techs use just the gun,and not a torque stick and overtighten the wheel nuts.

    does the steering wheel jiggle back and forth?with front wheel drive,if the vibration shows up upon light acceleration,or deceleration,it could be one of the driveshafts also called cv shafts is worn.how old are the tires?if the tires that were on the back used to be on the front,they could be out of round.if you put up the car,turn the wheels and using a reference point,see if they move up and down when you turn them.turn the wheels from side to side.there should be no play.if you feel a click or clunk,there is still a suspension or driveshaft problem.if the driveshaft is worn on one side,that would explain the pull at 60mph,one shaft is putting out more torque than the worn one.

Check your steering rack and pinion. A lot of the time the mounting bushings go bad. Destabilizing your steering.

Hello Russell,

If you replacing the front struts as an assembly the springs will be equipped and ready to install.

If your purchasing the strut assembly without the coil springs you will need a spring compressor.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle a service manual for safety precautions should be consulted.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Support the lower control arm outboard end.
  5. Remove the upper shock nuts.
  6. Remove the stabilizer link lower nut and then separate the stabilizer link from the lower control arm to gain access to the lower shock bolt.
  7. Remove the lower shock bolt.
  8. Remove the shock.
To install:
  1. Install the upper part of the shock into the frame bracket.
  2. Install the nuts. Tighten to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  3. Install the lower part of the shock into the lower control arm. Tighten the bolt to 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm).
  4. Install the stabilizer link lower nut to the lower control arm.
  5. Remove the support from the lower control arm outboard end.
  6. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  7. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

Car shekes when hit bumps


Check for bad wheel balance, struts, lower ball joints ( no upper joints) , outer tie rod ends, inner tie rod ends, stabilizer bar bushings, lower control arm bushings , and finally a wheel alignment ,you have some bad looseness in one or more of these front end parts. GOOD LUCK FRIEND.

I have a wobbling back end seat leon 1.9 tdi 2008 plate


wobbling from the rear end can be from worn suspension rubbers in the control arms. Normally it is from belt separation in the tyres and bulges in the side walls
I take it that it is a front wheel drive with no diff action at the rear.
another point may be that the rear brakes are grabbing ( out of round drums or warped discs) that is causing the vehicle to react as if the rear is loose.

Fix death wobble


To fix the "death wobble" you need to add stabilizer arms to the drag link. Use 2 and attach each to the frame on one end and the center of the drag link on the other end. They look like fancy shocks but they will save your life.

How to replace the upper control arm


  1. Loosen the wheel nuts slightly. Raise the front of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.
  2. Remove the front wheel and tire from front hub. CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the hub bolts when removing the front wheel and tire.
  3. Remove the upper arm ball joint self-locking nut(A) and the split pin(B).
  4. Using the special tools, disconnect the upper arm ball joint from the knuckle. Remove the front strut assembly
  5. Remove the two upper arm mounting bolts(A) from the body.

Check the backlash in bearing shaft direction and the axle hub deviation. Maximum for backlash should be 0.0020 in. (0.05mm) and for axle hub deviation 0.020 in. (0.05mm).

Removal & Installation

Torque the new nut to the No. 2 rear upper control arm to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm). Temporarily tighten the No. 1 arm bolt. No. 1 and 2 rear suspension arm assembly. Temporarily tighten. Toe control link. Torque new nut to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm). Rear stabilizer link. Torque to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Parking brake assembly at the wheel hub Rear speed sensor Rear axle shaft nut. Torque to 214 ft. Lbs. (290 Nm) and stake the nut with a chisel and hammer. Rear brake disc and disc brake caliper
  2. Adjust the parking brake.
  3. Stabilize the suspension as follows :
    1. Install the wheel(s).
    2. Lower the vehicle and bounce it up and down several times to stabilize the rear suspension.
    3. Raise the vehicle.
    4. Remove the wheel.
    5. Jack up the rear lower suspension armplacing a wood block in between. Apply a load to the suspension so that the lower suspension arm is plkaced in a horizontal position.

  4. Fully tighten the No. 1 rear upper control arm assembly to 119 ft. lbs. (161 Nm).
  5. Fully tighten the No. 1 rear suspension arm assembly to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  6. Fully tighten the No. 2 rear suspension arm assembly to 119 ft. lbs. (161 Nm).

    Rear tire and wheel assembly

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE If it is necessary to replace the hub or bearing, replace the components as an assembly.


    Rear tire and wheel assembly If equipped with rear disc brakes, the caliper mounting bolts. Leave the brake line connected and suspend the assembly out of the way. Brake rotor or drum 4 bolts and pull off the rear axle hub O-ring

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub on the carrier and tighten the bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) Rotor or drum Caliper, f equipped with rear disc brakes and tighten the bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) Wheel

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. If equipped with air suspension, move the height control switch in the trunk area to the OFF position.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Rear wheel(s) Height control sensor link from the lower control arm Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and wiring harness Brake caliper bracket from the rear axle carrier by removing the 2 bolts. Support the caliper with a piece of wire. Brake rotor Parking brake shoes and cable Cotter pin, lock cap and the nut holding the halfshaft to the rear axle Suspension member brace by removing the 2 bolts Halfshaft bolts and washers Halfshaft from the vehicle Strut rod
  4. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body for the No. 1 control arm.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut and adjusting cam Nut on the axle carrier side of the No. 1 lower control arm Separate the control arm from the axle carrier No. 1 lower control arm Stabilizer bar link from the No. 2 lower control arm.
  6. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut and adjusting cam from the No. 2 lower control arm Nut and bolt holding the No. 2 lower control arm to the axle carrier No. 2 control arm from the vehicle Nut and bolt on the lower side of the strut assembly 2 upper control arm set nuts and bolts Axle carrier with the upper control arm
  8. Secure the axle carrier in a vise.
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut holding the upper control arm to the axle carrier and remove the control arm Dust deflector. Use a suitable prytool. Oil seal

  10. Remove the 2 bolts and nuts and shift the backing the plate towards the hub side (outside).
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

Coat the threads with clean oil and install the hexagon bolts. Tighten bolts to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm). Suspension member brace with the 2 bolts. Tighten the 2 bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Nut to hold the halfshaft to the rear axle. Tighten the nut to 213 ft. lbs. (289 Nm). Lock cap and cotter pin Brake disc to the axle hub with the matchmarks aligned. Install the 2 screws and tighten the screws to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Brake caliper to the vehicle and install the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm). ABS speed sensor and wiring harness Height control sensor link with the matchmarks aligned. Tighten the nut to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Rear wheel(s) Negative battery cable

  2. Lower the vehicle and turn ON the air suspension switch.

  3. Press the hub out of the wheel bearing, then remove the backing plate.
  4. Remove the snapring, then press the wheel bearing out of the axle carrier.

To install:

NOTE Use a new toe control link nut for assembly.
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

    Backing plate bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) No. 1 lower suspension arm bolt: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) No. 2 lower suspension arm bolt: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm) Toe control link nut: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) Upper ball joint nut: 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm) Brake caliper support bolts: 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm) Rear wheel lug nuts: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm)

Stabilizer Bar

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the 2 nuts and left stabilizer bar link. If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon wrench (5 mm) to hold the stud. Repeat for the right side.
  3. Remove the 8 bolts, 2 No. 1 brackets and 2 bushings. Two types of bolts are used, so make sure the correct bolts are installed.
  4. Remove the stabilizer bar.

To install:
  1. Install the stabilizer bar.
  2. Install the bushing and bracket with the 2 bolts and tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm). Install the bushing to the inner side of the bushing stopper on the stabilizer bar.
  3. Connect the stabilizer bar links and tighten the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm). Repeat for the right side.
  4. Install the rear wheels.
  5. Inspect and adjust rear wheel alignment.

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    CAUTION Do NOT remove the center nut to the strut at this time. The spring on the strut is under high pressure and can cause serious injury.

How do i change my rubber bushings on the front suspention of my 1997 dodge ram 1500


opper Control Arm Bushings
  • To access the upper control arm, remove the shock absorber and the strut bar. Also, disconnect the sway bar from the lower control arm, if your particular Ram model is equipped with it. After that, you can hold the coil spring in place with a spring compressor.
    Secure the wheel hub assembly to the chassis using a wire before you disconnect the upper ball joint. This will prevent damage to the brake hose. When ready, release the ball joint using a ball-stud loosening tool (see Resources).
    The upper control arm mounts to the chassis with a cam bolt assembly. Once removed, you can place the control arm on a vise and remove the bushings using a bushing service tool (see Resources). When installing the new bushings, do not use any lubricant but make sure the flange on the bushing end seats properly on the arm bore. Then re-install the upper control arm. When finished, take your Dodge vehicle to a good shop to align the front suspension.
Lower Control Arm Bushings
  • Remove the shock absorber and strut bar. If your particular model is equipped with a sway bar, disconnect it from the lower control arm.
    Secure the coil spring with a spring compressor and release the lower ball joint from the wheel/hub assembly using a ball stud loosening tool (see Resources).
    Now you can release the lower control arm by removing the rear mounting bolts. Remove the bushings with a bushing service tool (see Resources). When installing the new bushings, do not use lubricant and make sure they seat properly on the control arm bore. Then replace the lower control arm. When finished, take your Dodge vehicle to a good shop to align the front suspension

I'm trying to change my struts on my 1994 ford thunderbird. I bought the full assembly with the springs and everything already together.. How do I go about doing this?


  1. Remove plastic cover at upper strut mount. Remove automatic ride actuator (if equipped). Remove 3 upper strut retaining nuts and collar plate from the mounting studs in engine compartment.
  2. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove tire and wheel assembly. Remove lower strut mounting bolt and nut. Remove nut at stabilizer link upper mounting stud. Separate link studs from spindle and stabilizer bar using Joint Separator.
  3. Support lower control arm assembly with jack. Raise control arm with jack until stabilizer link can be separated from spindle. Position link aside.
  4. Remove and discard spindle to upper control arm nut and bolt. Lower jack to separate spindle form upper control arm. Support spindle aside with wire or other means. Remove jack from lower control arm and remove strut assembly.
  5. Reverse disassembly instructions to install new strut on each side.
  6. Check alignment/have vehicle aligned.

REMOVE**** FRONT SHOCKS, FIRST OF ALL.SUPPORT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WITH A JACK,REMOVE FRONT WHEEL, REMOVE BRAKE HOSE AND ABS SENSOR HARNESS TO THE STRUT BOLTS OR CLIPS,REMOVE ACTUATOR FROM TOP OF THE STRUT,IF EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC ADJUSTING SUSPENSION. PAINT ALIGNMENT MARKS ON THE UPPER STRUT MOUNTING BLOCK AND STRUT TOWER AND ON THE LOWER STRUT MOUNT TO STEERING KNUCKLE SO THAT CAN BE REINSTALLED IN THE SAME POSITION. REMOVE UPPER STRUT MOUNTING NUTS, REMOVE THE STRUT TO KNUCKLE BOLTS,REMOVE STRUT ASSEMBLY.TO INSTALL ***** INSTALL STRUT INTO THE STRUT TOWER ALIGNING THE PAINT MARKS MADE DURING REMOVAL.INSTALL UPPER MOUNTING NUTS AND TIGHTEN TO 34 - 46 FT LBS. INSTALL STRUT TO KNUCKLE BOLTS TIGHTEN TO 55 - 61 FT LBS. INSTALL ACTUATOR AND ENGAGE THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR IF EQUIPPED WITH AAS. INSTALL BRAKE HOSE AND ABS SENSOR HARNESS CLIPS OR BOLTS.INSTALL WHEEL AND CHECK ADJUST THE FRONT END ALIGNMENT. TO ( REPLACE REAR SHOCKS ) REMOVE REAR WHEELS, REMOVE REAR PACKAGE TRIM. REMOVE SPEED SENSOR HARNESS, REMOVE TOP STRUT NUTS,THE SUSPENSION WILL DROP WHEN THE WEIGHT LIFTS OFF THE WHEELS. REMOVE BOTTOM STRUT BOLTS.REMOVE STRUT ASSEMBLY.TO INSTALL ***** INSTALL STRUT ASSEMBLY, INSTALL BOTTOM STRUT MOUNT BOLTS AND TIGHTEN TO 55 - 61 FT LBS.INSTALL UPPER MOUNTING NUTS AND TIGHTEN TO 33 - 46 FT LBS. INSTALL SPEED SENSOR HARNESS.INSTALL REAR PACKAGE TRIM. INSTALL REAR WHEELS.

Replacing front struts


Okay....here is the steps first....and then the directions on how to use the tools:

  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the front wheel.
  3. Detach the shock absorber lower mount by removing the two bolts.
  4. Remove the retainer nut, retainer, cushion and shock absorber.
  5. Detach the cushion retainer from the shock absorber.
  6. Compress the coil spring with a commercially available spring compressor.
  7. Detach the stabilizer bar.
  8. Support the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle securely.
  9. Remove the cotter pin.
  10. Loosen and remove the nut.
  11. Using a ball joint removal tool, detach the lower ball joint from the lower control arm.
  12. Loosen the suspension arm set bolt.
  13. Remove the suspension arm set bolt nut.
  14. Remove the nut from the strut bar front set bolt.
  15. Pull out both set bolts.
  16. Remove the lower suspension arm and coil spring. To install:
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the following torque specifications:
    1. Strut bar front set bolt: 221 ft. lbs. (300 Nm)
    2. Lower suspension arm set bolt: 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
    3. Lower ball joint nut: 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
    4. Lug nuts: 83 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
