Should be at the back of the motor down near the bottom of the block and should have a thick battery cable and a couple of smaller electrical wires connected to it.
Not sure which side of the block it is on but it has to turn the flywheel to start it.

My 2001 S type Jaguar is overheating when in slow traffic or at lights. No coolant loss. Recently swapped the starter relay with one other.

Sounds to me like you've got a cooling fan problem. Possibly even a sensor or a loose/broken wire. Try turning on the A/C and if it cools down that may be your problem.

2004 Jaguar, Vaden Plaus, car just quit running going down the road. Had to have it towed home Won't start, turns over, just won't start, says Restricted Performance.

Sounds like it is some type of 'limp home' mode.
It could be anything. It might be as simple as a bad Fuel Pump Relay. When you turn the Key to the ON position (not Start) can you hear a little buzz for about 1 second? That would be your fuel pump running. You need to see if the engine is getting gas and spark.

check to make sure your battery is in good condition if it is then you will have to check voltage at the starter and grounds. if these are good then the starter needs replacing.

I purchased very similar here in the UK £4800 (trade) two years ago, only problem so far has been O2 sensor failure which I replaced myself but was still fairly expensive. Other than that car has been good. Check for Jag service history

01' Jaguar XJR Starter location?

If you get just a click you should first check battery charge and all battery connections. The click is probably the solenoid kicking in but without enough battery to turn over the engine.

YOu need to purchase and install the ACM (audio connectivity module).
If you're in the US I know where to get the ACM. I have the instructions for the ACM install if you're interested. First you will have to spend money on the
ACM - about 300 dollars....

2002 jaguar s type 4.0 replacing starter

Hi

Yes,... if you are little mechanically minded, and keen, I don´t see why not.

Remember to disconnect the battery.

Support the car safely on axle stands, if jacking up.

And watch those knuckles...(Ouch!).. undoing those starter, bell housing bolts !

There seems to have been a run of Jaguar S Type, & X Type Starter problems of late, here on FixYa, so you are not alone.

Good Luck !

A FixYa rating would be appreciated ...Thank you !
