Question about 2003 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

1 Answer

Struts on the front are not going in easy, despite the clamps.

What can we do to make the the installation of this easier. Volkswagon wants 2k to do this...I bought the parts for 500$ - Back ones are in great...front ones are not going so easy.

Put them in ..hearing a bad noise..trying to set properly - would this have anything to do with the rubber seal at engine level where the bolt is?

That rubber on the top is the bushing.
it has to have no play in it.make sure the flange bolts are tight.
you need to revome the load off the suspension with a jack under the lower control arm .then tighten it down and release the suspension.

they could be gone if 134 km of stop and go driving.

if you stop the car,the front dips slightly.if you can see the bushings move,it needs to be replaced.

i would replace them and then you know it is all done.

You will need a spring clamp to hold tension on the springs when you remove them.
Jack up and remove wheels. Make sure that the car is supported safely, not just on the jack.
Put on the spring clamp and tighten it, undo the mountings for the strut, under the hood and at the axle.
Remove the strut complete with the spring.
Fit the spring to the new strut and fit it, take off the clamp. Make sure all mounting bolts are tight.

Noisy front end. any little bumb sends rough sound. the car rides great. I cannot stand the noise. I am about to change the struts, the sound is more a suspention point that is set up.

Before you change the struts check the stabilizer linkages and bushings. They will make a lot more noise a lot easier than a strut will. Also check the torque on the strut bearing bolts that go up through the strut tower. While the car is sitting, Push down hard on the front end and listen for where the noise is coming from. Other possible sources of the noise are the lower ball joints or the strut bearing. If you are changing the struts, change the strut bearings as well. You don't want to have to unbolt everything again if they go bad in ten thousand more miles. Good luck.

I have a 1997 volkswagon golf, an it feels like the back end floats everytime I go over a bump. Doesn't feel very stable to me. Could it be a suspension problem?

push down hard on back end then release suddenly, should bounce up then level straight away,if it continues to bounce, one side or the other then replace both shockers(match pair) easy job.

How do you install the shocks on a 1994 Chevy Lumina?

This model doesn't have shocks. It damps bouncing with McPherson struts. The front struts can have a new cartridge installed while in place, but it's an involved process. The rear struts have to be removed to replace the struts -- a more involved process that requires some special tools. The struts last a lot longer than shock absorbers, but are not nearly as easy to change when the time comes.

You may not have to dismantle the front, but it'll be a lot easier to do it that way. Go to google.com and search "Audi A4 Service Position" and you'll find some procedures that demonstrate how to open up the front of the car almost like a door, to have unfettered access to the front of the engine. It will make life a LOT easier, and it's very easy to do it, despite the fact that it appears to be a huge task. It's not.
