Engine diagnosis indicaator lamp comes on

Check the fault codes as something stopped the engine and is recorded by the CPU . It is something serious so have the codes read ASAP.

16 year old COP boots, all nasty and carbon tracked bad.
oil lamp , there are 2, one is pressure loss and 2nd is oil nag timer
we cant see the icon of the lamp to know.
the real oil lamp comes on at any stall doing the cluster self test
if the engine RPM falls below 800 rpm do to gross misfiring
the real oil lamp sure can and will come on.
real mans not silly OIL NAG, << we ignore that.

can the stall be voided with a fast right foot>.?
parked or in drive?
safe if engine misfires, (heard or felt) in PARK.
so we can cut the job in 1/2 (diagnosis)

What makes the car start and run but gauges go off and key light comes on

The first part is magic, (EFI system and good engine)
but?????
gauges go off can be a bad fuse or loose fuse to cluster.
when any Gas engine stalls. the RPM drops to 0
the EFI sees that and goes to key on, not started self test.
this is covered in the operator guide.
key light comes on KEY LIGHT, HUMMMMMMM
Let me look at the waring lamps, there are many.
one light is engine overheat that is logo of a thermometer but looks
just like a key.

immoblilzer (big trouble there)

a stall is anytime engine RPM drops to zero. called a STALL.
if your cars engine stalls, post that way, the lamps are all normal
on at any stall, on any car.
at a stall , rpm goes to zero and MPH drops to zero as you coast to a stop , stalled. that is all normal for any stall.

if engine stalls.
that is complex.
here is list.
  1. lost 12vdc power to EFI system. (battery died, fuse blown)
  2. never gave your car the 60,000 mile tune up, see opr, guide.
  3. bad fuel.
  4. overheated the engine.
  5. engine oil gone, never ever checked at each fill up.
  6. other more complex EFI system parts failures, ASK.

2009 Jeep Lib Speedometer Stops, Stalls and LIghts come on

no , you were told wrong, but ABS is bad too. (or was just the stall resetting ABS to self test mode)
you have 2 independent failures.
1: brakes. (if ABS is on,, not stalled !!!)
2: engine. (this is IT, fix this)

you are guessing at ABS parts.? just throwing them. why do that?
my guess is you have a mech, and you want seconded guessing
on line with blind folks here.


the engine stalls moving,
that usually means the ASD relay dropped out, did the IMMO light come on? you need to look at what all lights did in the cluster at stall.
a stall causes rapid deceleration and loss of all engine power
and RPM drops and MPH drops and at the point of stall
all Cluster lamps go ON. they go to key on self test mode as
stated in the users manual. (lost sure)
to witness this, key on, no start, and bingo the self test happens.
those are NOT failures. its just a self test. Per manual.

Does the ABS stay off driving and not stalling or stalled.
yes, then ABS is ok......

did you take it to a shop (crooks) and tell them my ABS is on?
and they see it's out, and go, gee we can make some cash here for nothing. if you tell them wrong, they will in fact guess, and make you broke fast.
ABS can go on just with a bad brake caliper pad. a $10 part.
if car stops ok, and the lamp is out RUNNING !!!!
Then leave the ABS alone. why assume the most expensive part on car is bad, why do that...???? why not put on new pads. and rotors.
first. then test the ABS. ABS is not magic it cant help stop any car with bad manual brakes. not at all.
end brakes; now back to ENGINE.


then fix the stalls,
here is the stalls list, for only the ASD.
(even a tuneup, will end stalling)

THE ASD is the funky Jeep thing, that kills the engine for many a reason. (there are tests for each case failure)

if the CEL lamp comes on driving < NOT STALLED)
then connect any scan tool, to the DLC connector at knees.
and scan the PCM for DTC errors.
then post those.
keep in mind, errors can AUTO clear, so not seeing them
in REAL TIME< means you missed the boat.
that is, you didnt get the facts of the failure.
but errors still in effect are stored and you can in fact
scan them parked, key on.
the CEL is only a SMOG light, you must scan to see the other 100+ errors. possible.

Better:
find a real ASE shop, and ask them to fix the stalls, (car stops good)
then they will fix that
and by magic the stalls are gone and the dash lamps go happy.

Stalling when turn back on

all stalls end in CEL check engine light on. that is normal
but CEL glow. when engine running , means you had a failure, and it stored DTC error codes, so scan it.
lots of causes. huge list.
get a tune up , tops list.

SCAN it to be sure all sensors work. running.
all fuses in car good.
by stalls , i assume the engine stalls and engine RPM is 0 RPM.
the stall cause the whole dash to light up, all the warning lamps come
on (self test) oil , charge , CEL. come on.
what is important is the stall and the cause.

i will tell you the 3 ways.
lost electrical power to engine EFI system (seems not)
bad engine, (lost compression hot)?
bad spark , spark died.?
bad fueling, lost all fueling (starves and stalls or floods and misfires horribly and stalls (black spark plug tips are big time clue)

if non eof the rings a bell.?
get the car serviced.

this car is newer nicer car, you (we) can scan and drive and log data.
allowing faster easy diagnosis.

Restating 2000 odyssey after warmed up

not sure what that means.
lets start over.
your saying car runs great, cold then hot.
then hard to restart a hot engine, right?
the light thing i dont understand
first off, when you stall and engine or just key ON.
the lamps all self test (read the operators guide there)
this is only a lamp test.
odd, the most important is skipped the CEL, check engine light.
is the engine stalling?
hot restarts, fails are: many.
  1. injector leaking at shut down.
  2. ECT reads to cold when hot. can be below caused
  3. Engine thermostat stuck open and restarts are over rich and floods. that hot engine must be at 180F or more,
  4. never did a 60,000 mile tuneup this decade?
  5. Fuel pressure too high.
i do tune ups first.
then check coolant temperatures, hot. 180F min, and holding or i kick the thermostat to the curb (new stat time)
if it sill dont want to hot start
out comes the scan tool
i scan it, got DTC errors.
is ECT reading 180F ? or above?

that is start on diagnosis.

Dodge intrepid 2004 showing code p1687, check engine came on and air bag light, speed ometer and tack gauge dropped to zero but started working 5 seconds later light is still on and showing this code. Can...

the lamps all change at engine stall , did it stall.
at about 300 rpm all engines (gas) stall, and the ECU changes state.
all cars.
does car run, ok, drive ok ,start ok, and sound ok? just a clue here.

My jeep begins to shake and slow down once I hit 35mph. It will eventually stop, and after sitting with it off for about 30-45min it'll accelerate again but only up to 30mph. It smells electrical, but I...

wow, no year , no jeep model or even an engine size stated.
cause is first. price is last. always.
stalls.
there are 50 ways to stall. (i can list them but is just a waste)
if you dont know how to do the tests, that leaves only 2 choices.
1: tow it in for diagnosis.
2: or get a house call,$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

since this forum can't do 1 or 2, that leaves , advice.
A: ever do a 60k tune up on this, engine in the last decade?
B: when running does the CEL lamp glow? , not stalled.
C: when it does stall and engine hits zero RPM is the CEL glowing (it must)
D: when it stalls are all cluster lights on and bright , per normal?
E: when it stalls does the dash voltmeter stay above 12v? or near.
if no dash meter , then connect a meter to the CIG lighter port
and watch voltage there at the stall.

CEL means check engine light.

that stall is from gross misfire. of the engine.
my guess.
bad spark
bad fueling
there are tests for each but im not typing 10 pages to say.

When i slow down approaching lights, it stalls and the engine check light is coming on! I do have an oil leak which I'm not sure where it is coming from and the oil is very low at the moment.

When a 'check engine light' (MIL=Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is turned on, there is a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) set/stored in the ECM/PCM (Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module). This code identifies which engine management system component/function experienced a malfunction. Once you pull/read this code, you may begin diagnosis.

While driving my colorado it just shuts off, No warning , I will be going about 65 or 35 and it will just go back to like i just cut my truck on

These are the toughest types of problems to figure out. The engine has to stall and stay that way to do a correct diagnosis. You don't give any details about your truck (year, engine, etc). Has the check engine light come on at all? A code might give you a clue. Unfortunately you're options are to wait until it stalls and stays that way or start replacing critical parts going from the most likely to the least likely.
