I have a 96 DeVille that did the same thing. It means your coolant tank is almost empty. It switches automaticlly to preserve based upon temp readings.

1996 CAD GOES TO THE ECON MODE I CANNOT GET THE AIR CONDITION MODE TO DISPLAY. WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM?

Hello Bluebear.

When this happens on the Cadillacs of that year it is low or empty on refrigerant or the low pressure cycling switch has a problem.
The reason it happens is to prevent the compressor from coming on to protect it.
Without refrigerant in the system it can't get properly lubricated and will burn out.
I would recommend the system be checked by a professional.
You will just be wasting your money on kits at auto supply stores.
If you would like further advise on your Cadillac's AC, please ask me in comments.

Thank you for using FixYA.

Tip

STOP YOUR WINDOWS FROM FOGGING on RAINY DAYS using the A/C SYS

On a Cadillac, as long as the AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL is set to " AUTO ", the A/C compressor is in operation, and your windows will remain clear wet or humid weather conditions. On the " ECON " position, the compressor is NOT OPERATING. A manual system in any type of vehicle, will also accomplish the same thing. Even in the COLD weather , put the A/C SYSTEM into the ON position with the compressor operating. Temperature adjustment can be manuallly, made wth the temp dial or lever. You will be pleasantly surprised how well this will clear the fog quickly.

I have a 1996 Cadillac Sedan DeVille. This spring...

If the a/c does not engage as a result of the electronic control system in your 1996 Cadillac, the climate control system may need to be replaced.

However, if the problem is being caused by low charge of R134a in the system, have the system charged before changing that electronic part.

I have never seen a Cadillac Climate Control System do this, which leads me to believe that it may be more electronic than refrigerant pressure related.

If the refrigerant pressure was low in the system, the climate control system should still stay on 'auto' mode, I think, and simply blow warm air.

When I push the air conditioner or the heat buttons, the screen shows econo instead of auto,do you know what's wrong? The car is a 96' cadillac deville, the problem just started, last year the air worked...

There is a problem with the air condition, econ, means the ac is not coming on,check to make sure the freon has not leaked out.If the freon is fine, see if the clutch is engaging on the compressor,if it is not ,then check the sensors on the liquid line ,along the firewall, they can go bad and the compressor will shut down, check all this and get back to me.

Recently added a leak stop r-134a freon to my 1996 deville and after about 2 days the compressor wont turn on and it wont go to "auto" cool and stays on "econ" cool. after adding freon to car i noticed it...

If it's misting, this is a definite indication of an overfill. You should get a hose with pressure guage on it to avoid this. In the meantime, if a dangerous condition exists within your compressor. The optimal amount of pressure you're looking for is in the 40-45 psi range. Definitely needs attention or you will do damage to the system. Best of luck.

Just brought used 94 cadillac deville ac works great but no heat

This is the the Cadillac Climate Control operates. When you press AUTO, the system will automatically maitain DESIRED temp . The A/C compressor will operate ALL THE TIME on AUTO. Don't want the a/c compressor to operate, PRESS " ECON". Air delivery will NOT be DE-HUMIFIED, nor will it cool, only warm,. Hope this helps.

Air Conditioning system 97 deville

Look for a high side pressure sensor. It sounds like something is tripping an A/C code.
