I meant, "you can try a coolant system flush".

  • its420_us May 11, 2010

You can a coolant system flush, but it sounds like you need a "new" radiator.

Does the fan come on ? If not there is a start. Temp switch is not turning on the electric fan. If this is working check that you have air flow throught the radiator (not blocked up with dead leaves and birds) Did this car overheat before you did the work ? If not you may have a bad airlock in the system and you need to burp it.
Hope this helps
Sam

Does it actually run hot, or do you think it runs hot? During normal operation, the temp gauge will sit around 3/4 to 7/8. The fan will come on when the needle jut touches the red. Its not overheating, this is just how it works.

Also the system doesnt need to be bled of air. It does this automatically. The tube that runs from the resevoir tank to the top of the intake manifold is a de-airation line. It gets excess air out of the system.

My 2003 dodge intrepid depleted fluid and I was told it was a sparkplug. I have new radiator and resivor. It was running hot.

It definitely was not a sparkplug. It is either the water pump, thermostat or clogged heater core.

2000 Gallant. Installed new radiator, thermostat, and water pump. Why does temp gauge read hot when it's not?

Disconnect the temperature sending unit wire connector for the gague ( not the one for the computer ) with the key on. The temp hand should stay on cold mark. Next, ground the wire and the temp hand should go to full hot indicating the gague and wiring to it are ok. If ok suspect a faulty temp sending sensor if the cooling system is full and properly bled

General advice:After warming up track the problem:sparkplugs (even new can have the ceramic parts broken/cracked /wiring (after warming up the isolation get's soft, can loose spark power)/ignition coil(s) (gets hot, stop runnig),running reach, fuel pump/fuel pump relay.Best guess:fuel pump mallfunction (low pressure) related, fuel filter cloged/water in the fuel/fuel line cloged/chipped. Cheers, hope u figure it out,let the people know.

Ihave a 99 vw passat 1.8 ,replaced head timing belt, gear, and cover, new water pump, thermostat, and overheats very quickly.it has 2 fans,1 electric the other is driven by beltsand is with fan clutch, clut

First, Ronald is an IDIOT! DO NOT power wash the engine EVER! If the engine is really hot and you spray ice cold water on it can crack the head instantly! Also, everyone knows' water and electricity don't mix! the ignition control module is $300. A little water on that and its gone!
If your car is overheating, you may need a water pump! The one you got, may have been bad! The rule is, as soon as a car overheats, the thermostat MUST be changed! A simple test would be to remove the thermostat and close it back up! A few dollars for the gasket is all you will spend! Try and run the car without it and see if it still gets hot! If it still gets hot, check the water in the radiator or resivor to see if the water is also hot. If its hot then the water pump is working and you need to check the fans! You can run a power wire to the fan to make sure they are working. There are relays for those also! If they are not turning on, that is most likely your problem! I rebuild VW's for a living!

Engine temp reading 3/4,new water pump, new thermostat, clean oil and new filter,no sign of water in oil,no steam out rear pipe, engine runs poor once hot, water pipes not tight when hot.head gasket? what you...

Remove thermostat and run the vehicle. do your hoses get tight now? If so, your new thermostat was not opening up. test it by putting it into a pot of water and bring up the temp on your stovetop. if the water boils, and the thermostat isnt open, then get a refund and a new thermostat. Be sure to point the spring end of the thermostat into the engine block when replacing. If your thermostat did open, then your water pump may be shot.

Overheating: 1999 bmw 323i m series 2.5 ..Installed: new water pump , thermostat. radiator, new Water Reservoir, cap.. hose on top side hot , lower hose cold even when engine is hot..no water circulating at...

the water pump and thermostat should have solved it. an air pocket can cause that but usually not to that degree.

don't get one of those cheap *** plastic impeller water pump for sissies. Get the metal impeller one. get a cool running thermostat and drill two 3/16" holes in it 180 degreess from each other. you may have installed the t-stat backwards.

Went to PEP Boys they ran a diagnostic test and said the car needed a tune up. So we replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap and distributor,IGN coil, Gas filter, air filter, oil change and the water...

My experince with PEP Boys is they do not honor their warrenties. But I would go back and complain about the car running hot since the only part of the cooling system they didn't change was the radiator they did something wrong. It should not be running hot. Is the cooling fan running? If not they probably didn't reconnect the wires to it or broke a wire. They also conned you on the water pump, you have to take out the distibutor to get to the water pump not the other way around.
