The idle is controlled by the engine computer through the idle air control valve. This valve will be mounted on the throttle body assembly-where the big air boot from air filter attaches. This valve can get deposits built up, restricting idle air flow to the engine. Take it off and clean it, and the air passages it sits over. Be looking also for a vacuum or air leak. Check the ends of the vacuum hoses for splitting or cracks that leak.

Check for vacuum leaks. You can spray starting fluid around all parts of the intake.Observe idle as you do.If there is a leak the engine rpm will race higher. Also listen for hissing noise. Is the check engine light on?..If so what codes are stored..Good Luck!!!

Check the AIS (idle speed motor) the bypass passage may be clogged with crankcase vent sludge. This is a problem I found many vehicles

SOURCE: i have a 95 mercury mystique and it starts but but

THE ENGINES THROTTLE BODY HAS A TPS WICH IS CALLED A THROTTLE POSITIONING SENSOR

It has a built in reostat inside of it which can get a flat spot anywhere in its circuit explaining why your car hesitates or sounds like it is ready to stall out
'
I would replace it and have the voltage set at 1.5 volts when set at the idle position
Then it should run fine again

1998 mercury mystique won't start / has spark / has fuel / cranks/

Fuel in the tank does not mean fuel in the injectors. Run a fuel pressure test to see how much fuel pressure there is. Also check the injector pulse with a noide test light. The injectors may not be getting a ground to fire because of a bad fuse.

Battery is drained by an internal short even with the key turned off on a 98 Mercury Mystique. No fuses are blown. With the battery fully charged it takes about 30 hours to drain the battery. Can a small...

Yes, it is very possible that a small internal short in the starter or alternator can cause this. Sometimes the starter wires can lightly touch and cause it to lose a charge. There are a number of things that can short and cause a battery to die over an extended period time. You should probably consult a specialist because it can be difficult to track down.

My mercury mystique ran out of gas I put gas in it but wont start

Turn the key on and listen for the fuel pump to prime, you ran out of gas, if it was weak to begin with that may have finished it.

My 1999 mercury mystique shut off when i come to a complete stop

It may be the timing on the vehicle! I was having the same problem, and now I am replacing the timing belt and serpentine belt. I pray that it is the problem and that it fixes what was going on. My car basically stalled when I came to a stop or slowing down fast. Eventually, when I came to a stop got out, and when I got back in, it wouldn't start. So, I may be wrong but I am hoping I am right because of the time and effort that I have put in this vehicle.

Battery dying... every month for seven months now???

Are you being told that seven batteries in a row have had faulty cells?I think it might be time to try something different as changing batteries hasnt got you anywhere but frustrated.Change the alternator and ask if auto zone can guarantee the problem will go away if you do,

My 1997 Mercury Mystique dies frequently when stopping at intersections or slowing down to make turns. If sitting still and trying to idle the motor surges and will finally die. Driving without any stop...

I have a 97 too, got it used and have had it for 6 years. Mine has over 120,000 miles on it. transmission has been replaced, now the alternator just went out. My car did this "cugging" and trying to stall for the longest time before the alternator went.
You should check all the hoses for sludge build up (especially if you let the gas get below 1/4 tank), then check the battery and altanator. These seemed to be the major problem with the car. Although now the electrical system in the car is going.
To make alternator repairs at a shop is just under $400.00 or you can do it yourself for parts and about 30mins of work for $170.00.
You can have the battery and alternator checked at Advanced auto parts or Discount auto parts for free.

Hope this helps! Other than that save your money and get out of that car!
