C6 Transmission wont shift into 3rd gear

I have a motorhome that has a ford 460 in it with a c6 tranny i checked the shift module pulled the hose off no fluid came out. i but a vacuum on the modulator and it held a vacuum. Could the shift modulator still be bad if not what other things could be wrong? I just finished a dropping the pan and changing the filter. the fluid is clean no metal particules this is a motor home and hasnt been driven much please help thanks

The shift shaft has stuck. The modulater shifts threw all gears so if you pull the hose off and there is no fluid leak then the modulater valve may be good. You could try turning the adjusting screw inside the vachumm hose and if that does not work pull the oil pand and lube all the shift solinoids they may have rusted fron condensation. Use a screw driver to get it to move the shift levers and buy some lucas trasmisson oil and run it in there it will soften the seals. Hope this helps.

When you dropped the pan, it would have been good to drop the valve body. Vehicles the sit for an extended period tend to have the the valve body gaskets driy out and allow internal leakage. This will also give you opportunity to make sure none of the spools are rusted in place or simply bound up. Be careful of the ck balls. They tend to stick and then fall out when you aren't looking. The valve body gasket kit should identify how many and where they are positioned. Looking at both gaskets will help you confirm where it was bypassing. Valve body needs to be torqued to avoid distortion which will bide rhe spools. So get your specs before tearing anything apart. Good luck.

1988 ford F-250 i have to accelerate hard to make it shift into 3rd gear but as soon as I let off gasd it goes back to 2nd.i changed fluid and filter.wondering if it is modulator valve.

Verify there is vacuum to modulator, the rubber line tends to break/falloff
Verify the kick-down cable is correct
Verify the linkage is correctly adjusted.
A C6 reads engine vacuum and throttle position to automatically shift

Have c6 trans locks good in 1st and 2nd wont shift into 3rd


Tighten the band adjustment to 18 inch pounds it is a stud with a locking nut on the side of the transmission it is the one located toward the rear of the transmission not the one towards the front that is the 1st/reverse band adjust replace the modulator if problem persists sometimes they stick

Ford Explorers are nice, but are commonly known for the trannsmssion to fail, I know becuase I know of people who also went through this tranny problem, Get it fixed and install a new tranny cool, heat is the number one cause for failure. I personally wouldn't get a Explorer from other peoples experiences.

It's in limp home mode. You'll have to check wire connections and electronic controls. If it has a vacuum modulator you can remove it and look for trans fluid on the vacuum hose side (meaning ruptured diaphram). Double check the parts you replaced as well, especially if they were used parts. My dad went through three speed sensors in one year on his Caravan. You should drop the pan after checking other components. It could be a bad relay, shorted module or wire. The three speed transmissions are much more reliable than the four speed overdrive transmissions but with age and miles things can go wrong and parts will wear out.

your modulator valve is unhooked, or bad. The modulator valve is what tells the transmission when to shift and what gear to shift to. It is located on either side of the transmission depending on the model, Im not sure which side your perticular model be on but it looks like a spark advance. I hope that helps you out.

check the kickdown/throttle valve cable. It may be bound up and stuck in the maximum position giving you extremely late shifts.

Fmx transmission not shifting out of first


You can check the modulator hose. The modulator is on the back of the transmission driver side. It should have a hose running to an intake vacuum port. If the hose is cracked or removed it will not work. If the hose is in good shape the modulator might be busted. Also check the kick down rod. It is on the side of the transmission where the gear select is. It will run up to the side of the carb, if it is stuck the tranny will not shift. if you have some questions email me.
