Oil is OK - not even any leaks at 258,000 miles. regualr oil changes always. Check engine light came on and goes off only when parked idle.

Thank you so much -- yes the light is amber not red - so that is a relief. Will get it checked out.

The check engine light is for the engine electronic controls, there is a fault, have the trouble codes tested by the dealer to see what is making the light come on. I assuming this light is yellow/amber colored? if not, and it is red it is a low oil pressure warning light, in that case the oil pressure sending unit on the engine may be defective.

Burning Oil

we check oil every other fuel fill up. on old cars, every fill up
did you run car 10,000 miles to a oil change? unstated.
1qt/3000 miles is perfectly OK.
so 10000 mles is 3.3 quarts burned and off the top of the dip stick
if you drive fast, it burns more, got a heavy foot, or load in back>?
if you had done it right, you'd have already learned YOUR engines
consumption rates, and learned to check when IT , needs checking
we do this on all engines. all machines.
all engines burn oil, the exception , a church car, new, and never driven, far, or fast or for 10000 miles to an oil change.

your mech, was right, he was thinking , you dont check oil?

How to do a oil reset on 2007 dodge ram 1500 hemi. everytime its time to change oil the check engine light stays on for 200 miles or so then goes off and does not come back on until next oil change...

the computer has a built in oil service light that will glow every 5k to remind you its time to have an oil service whatever oil you use.on this type of vehecle i have always reckoned using semi synthetic oil because of the cost.and changing it every 5k in heavy use.

Add 3 quarts of oil too much to the car the car started to smoke oil, check engine light came i got a oil change about 10 miles after that the check engine light went off the oil light has came on twice...

it may have blown the oil rings out on the pistons, thats what ive always heard about putting in too much oil is that it can mess up the oil rings and compression rings resulting in the engine needing rebuilt

Just had an oil change, two days later, the check

you can always take off your postitive cable, and negative welll just positive, Leave it off for about 3 to 5 hours. Then put the positive back on, this will reset your whole car. The check engine will come off but heres the catch you dont have much time probaby like 5 to 10mins before it comes back on. it work for me. Make sure the place your getting it inspected is close by maybe even do it near the place and then have them take it in from were you park. They will start it up, drive it in, turn it off. hook everything up. start it up again real quick to check if light goes on. It shouldnt. when I did it as soon as i left it went on. it was a close one.lol But give it a try and see if it works. Also dont forget to fix your time after reset, just in case some places get suspcious GOOD LUCK

Oil light goes on...had a dry stick 4 1/2 qts put in. no oil on ground. after oil change light went on at 70 miles.. on 15 secs then off for 5 miles then on again 15 secs--- off 4 miles--off 3 miles- off 2...

if it's not going onto the ground, and it's not being burned, check the positive crankcase ventilation and the exhaust gas recirculation valves for oil seepage...also check your air filter, if its got oil on it replace the pcv valve.

Oil pressure light comes on after driving on highway for 10 miles

Sounds like your sending unit sensor - if it was your pump going out, your engine would be history by now. Rule of thumb, if your oil check light ever comes on, it's usually too late to remedy the problem. You have a major issue, but since you've obviousely drove it quite a bit since then and it still hasn't seized up, I'm guessing you're ok...for now. Since you took it to a shop and they said you're ok, I'm assuming they checked your level and visually checked for leaks and found nothing. Either, you've got somethijng partially blocking your pick-up tube for the pump which is in your oil pan, or a electrical issue with the sensor. I would start by having someone check the sensor out and go from there...good luck.
