Replace the fuel pump relay, it is not uncommon for them to get stuck in the "on" position. The relay is located on the front right inner fender panel.

I have a 1991 ford explorer 4.0L Eddie Bauer edition. The idle revs to 2000 rpm's and then will drop to no less then 1200 rpm's. If I give it the gas it dies whether I'm in gear or not but when I...

There are several problems and they are all related. Check plugs if they a white with gray ash buildup. Gap .054

1. Fuel pressure regulator, if it is ruptured fuel will be vacuumed straight into the the intake causing idle surge also in causes temperature fluctuation and poor performance. It will also cause lean running condition.
2. The Mass Airflow Sensor also has a huge impact on mixture, defective symptom was a knocking and clattering under load especially uphill. Cleaning will only give temporary fix.
3. Spark Plugs- Do not use Platinum plugs they run hotter than standard plugs!
4. Any intermittent starting problems are likely fuel pump related, when you turn the key in the ignition you should hear the pump running!!
5. Preventive maintenance is the key change your fuel filter at recommended intervals.

I have a 94 Explorer, it run very poorly after changing these items it runs great, restored power, idles great and great mileage again and finally no more temperature fluctuation.

Could be the electric fuel pump if so equipped. What area(s) of the car the the fuse control, that should give you a hint. Some cars have a fuel pump system that the pump kicks on and off to keep proper fuel pressure up in the fuel lines. If not working right will run battery down in a few days.

1992 ford explorer (normally runs very well) sat for a few weeks in winter. then would not start. even after charge up. later check with ether, it ran until ether used up and quit. I dont have test...

so, the problem is you're not getting fuel to the injectors. to check that the pump is running, simply turn the key to the on position and listen for the pump motor. have someone listen at the fuel tank. if the pump runs, the fuel lines or filter might be clogged. also, there is most likely a fuel pump relay. locate it, probably in the engine compartment in the power distribution box; and while turning the key to the on position, have someone listen for the relay to click there is also a fuel pump cut-off switch to de-energize the pump in the event of a collision. check to ensure it is not tripped. it can be reset by pushing the red button.

Fuel pump runs when key is off

If your pump is continuing to run with no regard to the key position your fuel pump relay has failed in the on position. This happens when the secondary contacts fuse together and leave the relay stuck in the on position.

Replace fuel pump relay and your problem should stop.

Where is the fuel pump relay in a 91 ford explore??

In the underhood power distribution box, the fuel pump relay is the same as the a/c relay swap the two and see if your pump starts to run, if so replace it, if not check power at the pump connector located on top of fuel tank, if it has power and the pump does not run then the pump is bad, remember when testing for power the fuel pump only runs for about 3 seconds when you turn on the key, after that you have to crank the engine, hope this helps, let me know

1991 ford explorer run good one sec then run like it not enough gas is there. Then run good again.Changed wire's and plug's gas fliter. What else should I do?

you don't say whether you have had the trouble codes tested, this is a very important 1st test with a problem like you have, here is how you test for trouble codes, here is how u do that test, go to the link

if not codes show then suspect the fuel pump may be worn out and losing pressure or the MAF (Mass Airflow) sensor may be defective, the MAF is located in the large air intake pipe to the engine at the air filter, to test the fuel pressure u will need to buy a fuel pressure test tool for Ford cars and trucks, it is better cost wise to just let someone test this at a shop, remember the truck must be acting up for the test to be valid.
