Question about 1999 GMC Yukon

Old body style 1999 yukon.battery will be dead in the morning,every morning unless i unhook the battery.when i hook or unhook i have a massive spark when i touch the cable to the battery.it is not a short nor is it the pcm memory spark much harder than that.i ahve changed the alternator and unhooked and pulled relays and fuses narrowed it down to 3 50 amp fuses under the hood.i have even taken the ignition switch not the key but the electric connections on the ignition swicht it self. i would be glad to pay something if someone can helpme.but i have paid once before to a local shop just to tell me they were to incompetent to find the problem. yes i am frustated and a little angy over this. i love this truck and now that i am on disabilty it will be the last truck i ever own.help!

    i dont know how to communicate with { itscenter }.i am new here.i agree it is a big short ican take out all the fuses under the hood 3 three fuses will give me spark if the fuse is moved from one to the other.i dont know exactly are on these 3 circuits or i would just unhook them until it stopped then i would know. as far as the shop the just gets an evil grin on his face and says $ 75.00 an hour and wont charge by half hours it will be a full hour for every hour started. yes i will find a better shop who do not employ pirates.as an old mechainc i would like to solve this myself!

    the fuses are located under thye hood in the relay and fuse box.they are 3 50 amps in arow to eachother { 123} back to back.does this truck have a body control model?and by the way everything on this truck works their is not one thing that does not work except the horn and if u push just right it will work to.

    yes i will. i have a chilton and a haynes here and i am having trouble trying to find out what all them 3 power.later when the truck gets home i will try to find out what postion they excatly and post for comment and or direction. thanks "itscenter"

    scspriggs!!!!!!! i too agree. but i as alot of people us the term "short"meaning the same thing u just descibe. a short should pop fuses or catch things on fire. but when folks say short ,me too thats what most of us mean is rely/swicht.and u are right in my opinion swicht/relay problem.thanks and still searching! and thanks for that clairification/reminder !!!!!

    NO THE WIRE IS NOT AGAINST THE MANIFOLD.REMEBER LIKE THE OTHER GUY SAID THE BATTERY BEING DRAINED OVER NITE IS NOT A SHORT.THERE ARE NO BLOWN FUSES. IT IS SOMETHING OR THINGS STAYING LIVE EVEN AFTER THE POWER SWICTH IS TURNED OFF. i do not know what a resistive short is. everything in this truck works, everything. the three fuses are under the hood driver side next to some relys. now these 50 amp fuses are all individual fuses they all may be part of the problem. my first and biggest problem is how do i find out what is on each individual circuit. relys /switches my be sticking in the on postion when they should be off. i said i had a short but i miss spoke.

    anybody? well first off thanks for showing intrest. next i just got thru for the secon or third time explaining this issue.are my post being deleted????????? ok i'll go from here. 1. how old is it.? the truck is a 99 old style yukon the battery is brand new.. 2. every single nite unless the battery is disconnected. its gone dead twice this week at my wifes work . 3 i have cleaned the battery terminals repetedly . 4. i have 4 batterys i keep just in case its dead and she needs to go to work,dont want her getting fired.1 of them is new from wal-mart ,2 of them are junkyard batterys { ac-delco } and one is an off brand. every one of them have the recommended amperage, cold cranking amperage and the recommended reserve. yes all four of these batterys have been checked by wal mart ,autozone and my local chevy dealer. one of the delcos shows a littel on the low side and the off brand one shows a little low side but all three places agree they should be adequte for my truck. they were stressed test{ load tested} before and after they put them on the charger for an hour. good enogh to do the job.5 yes i have had the alternator checked at autozone and at my local chevy dealer.it passed with flying colors.some have said the diode is bad in it,ok. i changed alternators, everything still the same so it wasnt the didode. i guess. 3 .the 3 circuits are the only fuses i can take out and stop the battery cable from throwing off a massive spark when i brush it across the battery terminal.3 there are 3 separete fuses and they all three are back to back in the fuse relay holder box under the hood.if i can find out what things are connected to those cicuits i can disconnect them until the massive battery spark stops.then i will know what is causing this and where it is and hopefully be able to repair it.ther are no stuck relays that i can find all the lights are off even the glove box and the light under the hood.when it pitch black at nite ther are no inside or outside lights on.every single thing in this truck works just the way it is suppoes to.except the horn.and it if i push on the center steering wheel pad just right it works also. ok ron i hope that covers it any other questions let me know.

    This most likely is not a short unless it's a resistive short. A short will blow fuses and fusible links. This is likely something which has a switch/relay in the circuit which could be stuck in the closed position.

    3 50 AMP fuses? -- that sounds like a lot of amps for anything but the starter in a vehicle -- do you have any idea what circuit these fuses are in? Where are they located?

U DEFINATLY HAVE A SHORT.UNEED TO FIND OUT WHAT THOSE FUSES CONTROL.THEN DISCONNECT THEM 1 AT A TIME UNTILL THE SHORT IS GONE.OR FIND A SHOP WHO CAN FIX IT.

Your power wire too the starter is laying against the exsult manifold and shorting out this is common in gms!!!!!

Why does my battery ark fire when its first hooked up


  • There is a spark when the battery is first hooked up because you are completing the circuit. It is nothing to worry about so long as when the cables are completely hooked on there is no more spark.

I should make a 'slight' spark when you hook up the negative (very slight)-if it is a significant spark, you still have a drain-you can find drains on the battery by removing fuses while you have a digital voltage meter, hooked up to the battery-when you remove fuses, look for NO drop in voltage-there is your drain.

My 99 yukon wont start when its cold, I can spray carb cleaner in the throttle body and it will fire,but other wise it wont start unless its warm.


When is the last time you had a tune-up on your truck? During the cold winter months, if the battery does not have a proper level of cranking amps it is sometimes hard for the engine to turnover in the cold. You may need a tune-up or battery replaced.

1999 Jetta change battery, radio dead


Actually pull out the radio fuse for 15 seconds and then re-install. Mine usta just quit working once in a great while, and this was the fix. Radio fuse #42 if this is a "New Jetta A4 body" or fuse # 22 on an older "A3 body style"

That code is a Throttle Position Malfunction code.

This means one of two things:
1. The throttle body needs replaced
2. After the dead battery, you need to adapt the the throttle body.

The cheap way to do this is to leave the driver's door open, turn the key to the on position, but do not start the car. You will hear the throttle body self-adjust. This may take up to 2 minutes. That should get it close enough. To get it perfect requires a trip to the dealership.

If it does not help, the throttle body might be dead.

its possibly your alt. not maintaining a charge on the battery. go to a shop or parts store that test that item, and see were it leads. I hope this helps.
