Question about 1999 GMC Suburban

2 Answers

Suburban has power but only clicks once and won't turn over.

Almost positive it's the starter. Where do I find it and can I take it off myself?

I don't like going against conventional wisdom, but if it's just one click, and it's a faint click versus a heavy, more metalic click, I would first check the starter relay. If it's the relay, that's a lot less effort/money to fix.

Indeed it is the starter.....i had the same problem with my 1994 k2500 when i twistef the key....it only made a clicking sound and would crank...........

if it is a manual tranny the starter should be under the passengers side by the oil pan it is a big motor like thing.

if you have a automatic tranny i dont think the it is any different in location or size.....

"it is held by two screws mine was hard to reach but i got it to coperate.....

hope this helps XD

since you have a C/K suburban....

The starter will be found near where the engine and transmission connect. It should be on the engine side, and will likely be held in place by two bolts. It isn't incredibly complex, but the occationaly suburban had a nut for the wiring that is difficult to get to...

AND, just in case you want to make certain its the starter (normally the click sound is enough...but) you can lightly tap the back end of the motor with a hammer while someone else is turning the key... many times this will create continuity in the brushes of the motor and allow the car to be moved to an easier location for the repair. good luck

apologies for the typo (occasional not occationaly)

just in case you've never done it before, make sure to take the negative terminal off the battery first. always fun when you accidentally forget, shoot sparks underneath and then crash your head into the oil pan.

Take the positive lead off the battery. Touch the battery with the lead on and off for about five to seven times. This should reset the alarm. Reconnect the positive lead and using the remote control for the vehicle alarm arm and disarm the alarm once before operating as normal.

Won't start. key works in aux position but not when turned all the way

If you have power in aux position(ex.)radio works but doesn't when you put the key in the start position, the ignition switch is bad,the contacts are warn out for starting/cranking&run positions, these are used everytime you start your car,but auxillary is ony used once in awhile(ex.)your sitting listening to music while waiting for someone to come, but if you do have radio in the run position, but no cranking/starting you could have a blown resistor on fire wall or fuse for ignition,or the starter has called it quits, good luck I don't know if the starter is clicking rapid or just one click or just no power not cranking or cranking a better description of everything that happens will make this alot easier

2002 Suburban clicks when trying to start.

Yes it could be your starter the fact that you hear the click tells you that the starter solenoid is in fact working. Do check your connections for looseness or corrosion prior to starter replacement and fix as needed. Possibly has a dead spot on the starter that won't allow starter motor to turn even though the solenoid engages.

1999 Olds 88 won't start. It just clicks once. Battery tested ok.

These cars are notorious for failed antitheft systems. You probably don't even know you have it, but it is there. Go to this link, try the quick fix "ten minute trick"

2002 Chevy Suburban...Power/Battery?

Make sure battery is fully charged, try jump starting it, if it starts, and you can get a volt meter, put the test leads on the battery terminals, red positive black negative, have the dial on the meter at 12volts DC.
With the motor running, the meter should read between 14 and 15 volts, below that, the alternator isn't charging and needs replacing.
If it still clicks with a jump, the starter solenoid is bad and needs replacing. The solenoid is on top of the starter, which has to be removed to fix it.
