I have removed the belt but I have to replace the plastic "L" fitting that the coolant runs through and need to take the whole bracket off to do it. How do I remove the bracket

  • scott_b176 May 13, 2009

I have read the answer about replacing the serpentine belt on the free sight and it was not answering the question I asked. I have to replace the plastic "L" fittings that coolant runs through from the intake manifold to the tension pulley bracket. It requires removing the belt tension bracket and I need to know how to do this.

I'll accept this solution. I figured it out after removing the alternator. This would be helpful to someone who had a similar problem. I did not drain coolant and did not have to remove the heater hoses to replace the plastic fitting, just had to pull bracket back far enough to push one end of fitting into it, then slide back in place while pushing the other end into intake.
    Thanks

Here is the procedure for replacing the serpentine belt for a pontiac bonneville:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the belt guard or coolant recovery reservoir as required.
  3. For 1996-99 supercharged engines, perform the following:
    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    2. Remove the right-hand splash shield.
    3. Remove the connector from the crank sensor.
  4. For 1996-99 vehicles, remove the engine mounting bracket lower nut, stud and spacer. Carefully lower the vehicle.
CAUTION <>To avoid personal injury when rotating the serpentine belt tensioner, use a tight fitting wrench that is at least 24 in.Take note of the belt's routing. Lift or rotate the tensioner using a suitable sized breaker bar in the square opening or box end wrench on the pulley nut. Remove the belt from the pulleys.
You can use a box-end wrench on the pulley nut to rotate the tensioner ...... then remove the belt from the pulleys
Lift the tensioner, and install the belt onto pulleys. Make sure the belt is routed properly.
Many vehicles have a label you can check to be sure the belt is installed and routed correctly
  1. For 1996-99 vehicles, raise and safely support the vehicle. Install the engine mounting bracket lower spacer, stud and nut.
  2. For 1996-99 supercharged engines, perform the following:
    1. Attach the connector to the crank sensor.
    2. Install the right-hand splash shield, then carefully lower the vehicle.
  3. Install the belt guard or reservoir.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.
Hope I helped with the repair of your problem.
An Accept from you is how I get paid.
And a positive feed back tells me how I did with the repair.

Replace v-ribbed belt

Use a long wrench on the tensioner pully nut (located in the center of the pulley) Move the wrench to removed tension from the idler (this is spring loaded to maintain constant pressure on the belt) once that is done, the belt should be able to slid off the alternator pulley. With the belt removed from the pulleys, you will have to remove the engine mount bracket to be able to replace it. To do this first support the engine, then remove the bracket. You will then be able to remove the serpentine belt. Look under the hood for the belt routing diagram and re-install the belt, followed by the engine mount.

1997 pontiac bonneville se

There is a tensioner pulley attached to an arm.
Release the tension on the belt by undoing the pulley arm bolt, the belt will have enough slack to slide off the pulleys.
To put it back on, you find the diagram on the radiator guard or under the hood.

Need specifics on removing alternator on a 98 Pontiac Bonneville SE, not supercharged, with instruction on tensioning the belt upon installation of new alternator.

The belt is removed with a 3/8" or 1/2" square drive ratchet or breaker bar and the belt can be slid off while holding back tension. There are 2 bolts that hold the alternator and maybe a side bracket that attaches it to the engine. The main power wire is bolted to the back of the alternator and there is also an electrical connector that is removed by pulling while depressing a tab. Reverse these directions for installation. It can be done in about 5mins by a shop.

Need to replace serpentine belt on 96 pontiac bonneville don't have diagram on how to put it on pulleys, and motor mounts are in the way how do i do it?

On Bonnevilles (1996 SE ), the belt is routed around the front engine mount to get to the air conditioner accessory. Once you turn the tensioner counter-clockwise using I believe 5/8" socket with a 1/2" drive breaker bar, so you have good leverage, you can remove the belt from the accessories. The front engine mount has three legs that connect to the front of the engine (on the passenger side of the car). You have to unscrew the lowest of the three mounting points (easiest done from the under side of the car, with the plastic shielding moved out of the way), which is right next to the crankshaft pully. Then there is a round tube spacer in between the engine block and this leg of the engine mount that you take out, and you can pull the belt out through there.

I Started my car an my serpentine belt poped off and seems loose.

You may need to take it to a shop or have someone replace the tensioner for you as that ca be the only reason as to why your belt came loose unless the belt snapped in which case you need to replace the belt good luck

Thanx for diagram, where do i start on changing serp. belt on 1996 bonneville?

Crank the tensioner over so that you have some slack in the belt and pull the old one from one easily accessible pulley. Pull the belt off the pulley system and put the new one on following the diagram. Crank the tensioner again and use a screwdriver to pull the belt over the uppermost pulley. Release the tensioner and check belt tension.

How to replace accessory serpentine belt on 1996 Riviera

The supercharged 3800 engine uses two accessory drive belts. The outer belt drives the supercharger. The inner belt drives the generator, power steering pump, coolant pump and air conditioning compressor. All driven accessories are rigidly mounted to the engine. Drive belt tension is maintained by the spring loaded belt tensioner. Each belt has its own tensioner.
Remove: Place a jack with a block of wood on it under oil pan to support engine. Caution : Be sure the wood block extends past the width of the oil pan to avoid damage.
Torque axis engine mount bolt where it connects the mount to the engine mounting bracket.
Electrical connector from crank sensor.
Engine mounting bracket lower stud and lower engine to allow stud to clear frame rail.
Raise engine and reinstall bolt into torque axis mount. Lower engine to allow spacer to be removed.
Belt(s)

Istalling: Belt.
Spacer. Remove bolt from torque axis bracket and lower engine.
Electrical connector to crank sensor.
Mounting bracket stud.
Raise engine and install torque axis mount bolt.
Tighten bolt to 87 Nm (52 lb. ft.)

Good luck and hope this helps.

My problem is that i cant find a way to put the engine belt on my car. The engine bracket is in the way so i just need help putting the belt on. Am i supposed to take the bracket off and then put the belt...

There are 2 types of engines that you need to remove two bolts from the the engine bracket. to be able to install the belt. remove the bolts . not to be confused with the nuts . In order to replace the belt. there are only 2 bolts. Then you pry the tensioner to loosen the belt. remove it and press the tensioner to install the new belt. it will create tension automatically. hen replace the bracket.
