Question about 2004 Nissan Sentra

5 Answers

Why would my '04 Sentra with 26,000mi need new head gaskets?

My 2004 Sentra seemed to be pulling toward the right so I took it in and the dealership service dept told me it needs new head gaskets for about $2000. I only have 26,000 miles on it, bought it new and have taken it in for all advised maint. I drive on surface streets and local freeways. Seems peculiar that it needs this major work with this low mileage.
Thank you.

Well you should look at the bottom of the oil cap after the car has been running a few mins to see for moisture if your head gasket is leaking your oil and water is mixing. look for a muddy dip stick. a mechanics way would pressure test each cylindar one would have signifigant difference if they are all in the same range i would not worry. Pulling to the right could be as simple as a bad tire sidewall good tire shops have balancing machines that measure for stiffness..or perhaps a bad bearing or bad ball joint could be the blame it is possible the steering rack is faulty but with that many miles i would not bet on it..

Well as we all know things do breakdown.
however i dont know why a pulling to the right symptom would even point a sevice technician to head gaskets.head gasket symptoms are loss of power ,running rough, water in oil etc...
for piece of mind have another mechanic do a compression check on your engine and a visual inspection for water leaks etc .sounds fishy to me..hope this gives you some help....chris

I think they are trying to take you for a lot of money,A head gasket has nothing to do with the steering,Take it to a tire place and ask for an alignment. This will fix the pulling to the right.

More than likely you have a bad tire. Change front tires side to side and see if the pull changes or goes away. If so then have the tires inspected for bad belt or uneven wear. Posible alignment or just a bad tire.Moe

Why would you rate an answer that has nothing to do with the problem of "pulling to the right" Do you have a head problem or a steering problem?

Take it to an alignment place as advised above for steering problem. As far as head gasket goes, if your coolant or oil consumption hasn't inceased, then I wouldn't sweat it at this time. Check those levels often for a while & if noticeable increase, get back to us. As far as moisture signs under oil cap signaling head gasket leak, you have to be careful there too, although that is good advice, too many short trips can have some of the same effects on condensation building up on cap, especially when weather is cooler.

No. Check if it is the head gasket or simply the rocker cover gasket that is leaking. The cylinder heads can be removed with the engine in place, if it is the head gasket.

You obviously have an electrical short, Power seems to be pulling directly off engine to sound system somehow. Never heard this one before. First thing I'd do is check where wire is feeding to sound system and eliminate it.

I had a similar problem with 2003 nissan sentra, no heat , and car would stall on road on and off. Became a problem more frequently stalling. Took to nissan and they said it was head gasket. Fixed it and never had problem again. But i had it fixed at a local dealership since nissan was charging 1000.00 compared to 550.00. I replaced water pump and thermostat first b4 this and no cigar.

Blown head gasket

That would be a lot to type out on the computer.
My best advise would be to get a Chilton Manual at the autoparts store. It cost about $20. You'll get all the info you need plus pictures and diagrams. The Chilton book will be the best research material for the type of job you are going to do.

Broken sun visor

The sunvisor is attached to the roof with 3 screws on the outboard end of the visor (towards the door). Once you removed these 3 phillips head screws and pull the attaching bracket down, there may be an electrical connector you will need to unplug. This is not a difficult job.

Hope this is helpful!

Yes, they do like to prematurely blow head gaskets. They have problems with the fuel pumps. They also have issues with prematurely wearing out hub assemblies.
