With the age of the car I would be worried a little.
A very common problem is the suspension parts .

I have a power steering leak how and what do I need to do first to fix this problem?

First thing is to identify where the leak is, you have hoses, or the connection under reservoir where the most common leaks will be found. Of course if leak is not coming from top area then you have to look underneath where the rack is located. Just look for the leak where you usually see rubber accord boot located on inside end of steering tie rod. If it is not the upper hoses at pump, and just a seal in rack, try power steering stop leak, I used Lucas with great success on one of my vehicles.
Good luck. FREE-BUSINESSES.com

How do you add power steering pump to 95 toyota tercel

Do you need to replace an existing pump or is your car currently manual steering? If it is manual steering there will be more than just adding a pump. The actual steering rack is most likely different from a power steering unit so there would be multiple components required to convert. If your pump is faulty, you just need to disconnect the lines, remove the belt then remove the pump and install the new one. While you are doing that I would flush the old fluid out of the rack to increase life span of steering rack.

Power steering fluid leak in 99 Toyota Corolla

look for split in the hard line where fluid is leaking. If you see split, change the line only. make sure power steering reservoir is filled and rack and pinion is full (charge with steering wheel left/right motion). You should be able to remove wheel and inside wheel panel to see power steering fluid shooting out of any hole. There is hydraulic pressure on the lines.

common leak points are the front pump seal on the pump or where the resivoir meets the pump. also common p.s leaks are the rack itself or the line from the pump to the rack. hope that helps

98 Ford power steering keeks bursting the high pressure hose.

it sounds like it is pumping too much pressure, you need to take the vehicle to a power steering specialist & have the pressure adjusted otherwise you will just keep bursting hoses or the seals on the steering rack......hope this helps.....cheers.

I'm having problems with the power steering. Not sure if it's the pump or the rack and pinion. I have removed the tie-rods and turned the wheels manually and there is no stiffness in the ball joints or...

Yes, there is a way to test it but it requires a special set of pressure gauges. I will tell you however, that pump failures on GM vehicles are rare. (unless they are leaking externally) Internal leakage (without leaking on the ground) in rack & pinion units is quite common.

Power steering is leaking bad , its a 1998 achieva i tried all types of stop leak. cant find where its leaking

You need to clean the P/S pump, all connections, and the hoses with a good degreaser. After everything is totally clean and dry start the engine and turn the wheel left and right a few times to increase pressure then shut it down and start looking for the leak. Look around the pump case, check at all clamps and tighten them all, check metal lines connected to the steering gear assembly. Get under the vehicle with a flashlight and look everywhere. If you can find no leaks anywhere in the system then the steering rack itself is leaking internally and will need replacing.

Check the high pressure line from the pump to the steering gear (rack) if the hose is good, check the rubber bellows at each end of the rack, if they are leaking oil, the rack will need to be replaced. If you dont have much money, the rack could be put off, but be sure to keep the fluid level full, you dont want to run it dry and ruin the pump. The hose isnt real big bucks, but the rack will be, plus an alignment.

Power steering hose, leaking. How to replace power steering hose.

You will have a leak from the pump, pressure hoses or the rack. You will have to get the system washed down and inspected for the leak, most common problem is the steering rack leaking, this will leak oil onto the exhaust and cause your smoking problem, start her.

Remove the power steering pump pulley.
