Several things could be causeing this. First you should do a system pressure check. Connect a set of A/C gauges, the low side pressure should be between 25 and 45 psi and the high side around 150 psi (plus or minus depending on ambient temp) with engine running & comp. clutch engaged.. If the low side pressure starts to drop and continues to drop it is because there is air and moisture in the system, which vercomes the dessicant inside the system and it will freeze up at the expansion valve. If the system is frozen up, nothing moves, so the compressor is acting more like a vacuum pump and will kick out. Have a HVAC professional evacuate the system, (may need to replace the receiver-dryer), add a bit of oil and then charge the system to mfrs. spec. Then u'll have air.
It's likely it was not charged correctly the last time that caused this problem.
Good luck...I hope this helps.

If the system is fully charged and functional, then the problem lies in the compressor. Compressor clutch, pulley or coil replacement would be the next place to inspect. The refrigerant system can remain fully charged and the compressor clutch can be serviced in the vehicle.

A/C compressor does not engage for 10-15 minutes after start

you have a clutch gap problem, the a/c clutch has worn and the electric magnet can not pull it together. take your car to a local repair shop and ask them to set your clutch gap to 0.014" inch. this repair is simple and should cost less than 100 dollars
