97 explorer engine taps

When first starting my 97 Ford explorer it has a loud engine tapping noise for about 3 minutes and then it stops. I've tried an oil restore treatment, but same problem. Any cheap solutions??

What this sounds like is that your engine is starving for oil and the tapping noise is yuour rocker arms. this could be due to sludge build up on the intake screen of your oil pump or the pump itself is weak and no longer is providing the needed oil pressure. another place for sludge to build up is the valve covers and until the engine heats up very little oil is circulating to the push rod, rocker arms, and lifters. my suggestion is to clean the valve covers, drop the oil pan and remove the pump to look at the gears to see if there are missing teeth. also clean the screen of the pick up tube. replace the oil filter and put in new oil also use lucas additive this will do a good job of keeping the sludge build up to almost nill. if the problem persists then i would say that one or more of your hydraulic liftyers is weak and then they will need replacing.

It sounds like a lifter in your engine. It might be that the adjusting nut on a valve is loose and needs to be tightened. Remove the valve covers and adjust all of your valves using a mechanics stethascope. This will eliminate the loose rocker theory and will let you know which valve is noisy. If it is a bad lifter and you do not want to replace it, substitute 1 litre of ATF for your regular engine oil. ATF is full of detergents which will clean any sludge out of your engine and it also has seal conditioners that will help swell your aging seals. Do this with all oil changes.

Er no. Sounds like a hydraulic follower on the cam You could try putting a pint of diesel in the oil sump and then run theeengine for 20 mins at fast idle then drain the oil and put 5w40 grade in or us grade of similar spec. THE THINNER THE BETTER. change the filter at hte same time it could work. I have found this in the past. For some reason diesel seems to do the job better than oil restorers

No, if you can find out if it is the valves or lifters, or if it is the lower end. You can make a better determination if you know if its miner or major.

yes hydrailic and no will not affect engine. Engine problem is just more noticed when transmission not engaged.
Squealing is probably pilot bearing--not a big deal.
Tapping--maybe lifters pumping up
Engine light--get car scanned and report trouble codes back to us.
Autozone and Advance, among other parts stores, offer free scans.
