Question about 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan

Lost instrument display - ODB II Code P1689

I've lost the instrument cluster display and have a trouble code of P1689. According to the ODB II code reader it's "Manufacturer Control Auxiliary Inpits Auxiliary Outputs". I have no idea what this means. Can you help?

    Thank you Molson02536, I found that too but the symptoms I'm seeing don't match. I lost the instrument cluster and the van starts and runs fine. I've pulled and reseated every fuse in the interior block also replace the instrument cluster fuse.

    OK, that makes sense. I've been doing a lot of reading about this online and have found this solution has worked for others as well. Strange, I started the van yesterday and, low & behold the instruments worked fine. We decided to rent a van for an upcoming trip to upstate NY so this is not as urgent a problem. I plan to pull the dash apart after returning from NY and have a friend who does my electronics work, I'll have him check out the connectens and repair if necessary. Will let you know. P1689 No Communication between ECM & Ins
P1689 - Indicates a Data link failure between ECM and fuel injection pump. Low power, engine dereated or engine stops.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

  • Fuel Inj pump Gnd ckt open or high resistance
  • Fuel pump ctrl mod harness observable defect
  • Datalink (+) circuit open
  • Datalink (+) circuit short to ground
  • Datalink (-) circuit open
  • Datalink (-) circuit short to ground
  • Engine control module defective
Hope this helps. Check the fues box under the hood and under the dash on the drivers side. Look for any bad corrosion or bad fuses.

    There is a connection in the back of the instrument cluster right in the center. Your going to have to remove the cluster from the dash, most of the time where the wire harness connects to the cluster, The solder goes bad and needs to be re soldered.


    If everything else is doing it's job, then it's just that easy fix, Once and a while a good thump to the cluster brings it back to life but not to hard that you break something.


    I believe the connector is red in color the last time i fixed my dad's Caravan. Between dad and dodge, i can never keep the dirt away from under my finger nails. LOL

Same symptoms here. Dash display goes out or is intermittent. Thumping the dash by the temperature control slider can fix this temporarily. Problem in my van was a faulty / overheated ground connector pin in the connector assembly (1 of 2 on panel back) which due to heat had oxidized and was not connecting properly. Re-soldering may fix, but the overheating in my case caused the connector to the rear of the temp control panel to melt away a bit from the pin. Problem just got worse over time. Replacement of temp control / defrost dash panel and rear harness connector needed - got from wrecker for a few bucks - but you have to solder the new connector assembly in. Not a small job, and finicky for some.

Instrument Cluster and Panel Illumination The instrument cluster and panel illumination is used to provide backlighting to the instrument panel, switches, and control components when the headlamp switch is in either the PARKING LAMPS ON or HEADLAMPS ON position. The level of intensity is adjustable by rotating the instrument panel dimmer switch either up to increase intensity or down to decrease intensity.
Fixed Backlighting When the accessory delay relay is energized, switched voltage is supplied to the non-dimmable components and switches.
Dimmable Backlighting When the parking lamps or the headlamps are in the ON position the smart junction box (SJB) monitors the input from the instrument panel dimmer switch. The SJB sends a pulse-width modulated (PWM) voltage to the dimmable components and switches based on input received from the instrument panel dimmer switch. The SJB also sends a message over the controller area network (CAN) to the audio unit, and the instrument cluster to indicate the backlighting intensity level.
If you don't know about PWM an smart junction box your better off taking your vehicle to a quailified repair shop ! You don't the diagnostic tools or technical information . May have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored in the SJB (computer ). Do you know where SJB is located ?

  • check that the program card is correctly installed.
  • check the connections to the vehicle.
  • check the ignition switch position.

  1. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to Symptom Chart .
    • The control illumination is inoperative

'95 Lincoln town car. Husband was driving uphill and the digital dash suddenly went dark. Radio is working and a/c is not. Exterior light still working and so are interior lights besides the dash


Could be a bad wire possibly chaffing or grounding out to to another wire or frame. Check your fuses. You may want to pull the dash out and check that wiring as well

Check engine light


You must connect an ODB-II code reader to determine what codes are stored (which will also indicate what has failed in your car that caused the Check Engine light to illuminate). Once you have repaired the defects, the ODB-II code reader may be used to reset the stored code condition.

After disconnect and reconnect the battery of my opel antara, the indication of odometer displays only 888... for all indications. How can i reset it?

Instrument cluster consists of electronic analog gauges, various warning lights, and optional tachometer. Vehicles equipped with tachometer have an electronic vacuum fluorescent transmission range indicator (PRND3L),odometer and trip odometer display. Vehicles without tachometer are equipped with a cable-operated transmission range indicator.
Instrument cluster is equipped with the following warning lights:
Battery voltage.
Cruise (speed control).
Door ajar.
Fasten seat belt.
Lift gate ajar.
Low fuel level.
Low windshield and washer level.
Traction Control.
The Body Control Module (BCM), which receives input from various sensors, sends display information to instrument cluster and operates gauges. Instrument cluster incorporates a self-test diagnostic feature to identify electronic problems. BCM, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and Transmission Control Module (TCM) are continuously monitored by the diagnostic system.

When you have an engine check light you can read the codes with a OBD II reader. If you don't have one then you can go to the nearest auto parts store and they will read them for you. The google the code you find and go from there.

if you can find the plug m8 yes usually in drivers foot well behind dash or unders ashtray or panel under handbrake
