Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

Timing chain problems

I own a 1998 exploer 4wd and im having problems statring it up. the motor crancks over. i can see the crank shaft and all the pulleys turn but the motor sounds like there is no combustion in the cylinders. i removed the oil fill cap on the valve cover and i can see clearly that the timing chain on the driver side head is turning. First question is: are the other two chains turning? the motor turing over has a very stright sound. im looking for a mechanic to contact me to give me an idea on what the problem might be. so then i wonder is there some kind of sensor that controls timing and is it off timing? these trucks have all kinds of difrent sensor the control all kinds of things. ive called all over the place to get info but of all the temn places ive called nothing. not even the dealership. so i came across a truck alike except there are two types of engines. the x and the y. i found out that if the vin # has an x in it the motor has no third engine balancing chain. and the models that came out with a y in the vin# have a thrid engine balancing chain. another question is are they interchangable? i dont know what path to take or where to start.

If the engine is turning over Quickly or sounds like there is no compression is a fair bet to assume the cylinders have touched on the valves and bent them. It could be the Cylinder Head gasket but Unlikely. As far as i am aware th X and Y enines are not The same Think the crank case is different so if it's a new motor it will need to be the same as yours that you replace it with. I m looking for chain timing marks on xc 1.4 holden combo any one can help please

there is no marks on both camshaft gears or chain, and special tools are required if this is the twin cam engine with chain drive not belt.
timing mark on crank pulley must line up with mark on cover then there is a special tool that lock both camshafts at rear in the flat slots as well as lock pin to put into hole in block that locks cranck shaft.
then there is another special tool for camshaft sensor interuptor ring which is on one of the camshaft gears.

I have a 91 22re 4wd 5spd when it first starts it makes a loud clacking noise that goes away after a few seconds what is that noise my rocker arm shafts and rocker arms are in good condidion

The 22re engine was infamous for having timing chain problems where the timing chain guide and tensioner would rub on the back of the waterpump. Check your timing chain to make sure all components are operating correctly and check the back side of the water pump. If it succeeds in tearing up that water pump cover you will coolant rush into engine and water lock the motor. More damage than checking and or replacing the timing chain and components.

Timing chain broke on my 96 cavalier 2.2 ohv. Replaced the chain and tensioner but now the car runs rough necause of a miss n the car. The motor had to be hoisted up in order to change the timing chain im...

If the chain broke while the engine was running, and I presume it did, it is possible that you may have damaged the valves. When the chain breaks the cam shaft stops moving and the valves stay in their last position. The pistons continue to move until the engine comes to a stop. An open valve can be hit by a piston, sometimes breaking the valve or just bending the shaft. Also you have to be sure the new chain has the cam shaft and crank shaft properly timed. As I understand that that engine does not have timing marks on the chain sprockets. To test for damaged valves, remove the spark plugs and test the compression in each cylinder by cranking the engine while holding the compression gage in the spark plug hole. All the cylinder should have the same pressure within about 15 psi. A cylinder with damaged valves will not have any compression pressure. If you are unsure about the valve timing check into how that engine is timed. I don't have that information but if is out of time it has a very major effect on the engine performance and idle. I hope this gives you a place to start looking for the cause of the mis. Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

you cant use the cam gears on your "new motor' the cam gear from the old one must be used if it will fit.the starter problem could be a bad solonoid or a wireing problem cant tell by your desciption.

Won't Start.

These trucks have a problem with the catalytic convertor blocking the exhaust causing a no start condition, the three things you need to start fuel, spark and air. Try disconnecting exhaust in front of cat.
