Change your fuel filter. **** at the bottom of your gas tank probably clogged it.

How do you start a engine of a 97 Buick Century Limited after its been flooded?

Your car has an electric fuel pump installed the gas tank. Pressing the gas pedal does not bring gas into the engine like the cars fitting with mechanical pumps connected to the engine.

To start your car after running out of gas, simply turn the key from the "Off" position to the "Run" position. You should hear the pump running (whirring / buzzing sound) for 5 seconds or so if you listen closely; then return the key to the "Off" position. Repeat this 3, 4 or 5 times to allow the pump to prime and flood the all the fuel lines, filter, etc. between the tank and engine.

If you can not hear the pump, have someone crouch down low near the tank while your turn the key (remember - only turn from the "Off" to the "Run" position - not all the way to the "Start" position each time). If they can not hear the pump, the fuse for the pump may have blown. Check your manual for the location of the fuel pump fuse and replace if bad. If still not hearing the pump, it may have failed when you ran out of gas as the fuel in the tank acts as a coolant for the pump. If this is the case, the pump will needed to be replaced.

Finally, you may have luck rapping sharply on the exposed tank with a rubber mallet of block of wood (do NOT use a steel hammer or tool as any spark could be disasterous) when the pump should be running. If the pump is simply hung up on sediment, etc. the vibrations *may* cause enough movement to allow the debris to become dislodged - allowing the pump to run once again.

I hope this helps and good luck!

My car ran out of gas, now it will not start

If high miles, it may be a fuel pump. Fuel pumps usually go when gasoline is low and pump gets too warm. This may mimic running out of gas when there is a gallon or two of gas still left to draw but needle reads empty. Have someone put their ear to the gas tank while you turn on the ignition switch. the pump should run for 2-10 seconds with key on and not cranking.

If you don't hear the pump run, then investigate further for a failed pump.

Car wont start

You need to be very quiet for this test, but try turning the ignition key until dash warning lights are on, but without cranking the engine. Listen for whirring noise from fuel pump in the gas tank. You may even lift out the rear seat base, to pick up any sound as best you can. If you can't hear anything from several attempts then it's likely you have a failed fuel pump. The fuel pump can sometimes suffer damage when running out of fuel.

Car Fuel Smell

You rubbed through the fuel tank or cracked it and it has a small leak. They make a fuel tank repair kit you can by a a auto parts store some times they work and sometimes they don't. If gas is spraying or leaking on the exhaust you could have a fire. I have drained a tank and put a screw with a fiber washer in the hole and then covered it with a 1/2 inch if silicone rubber it lasted for 5 years. Your fuel lines and filter are usually up on the side of the frame and should be ok

Engine cranks fast, I do not smell gas or hear fuel pump running. Have 75,000 miles on car. I ran low on gas and refilled tank and now I have trouble starting my LS. The cars gas filter is not 5,000 miles...

Usually, the reset is located in the trunk. Check the fuel pump fuse. Check the fuel pump relay if equipped. You can also turn your key to acc for 7 seconds, turn it off. Turn it on, and off. This will prime the fuel pump. If you don't hear it at all, it is probably bad. Some are located in under the back seat and some, the fuel tank has to be taken off. The pump needs to have 12V, in order to work correct.

Car wont turn on smells like gas

It should not smell like gas unless the engine is REALLY flooded. But todays computer controlled cars won't allow that. I think you have a fuel leak somewhere.

Gas line filter may be dirty and clogged. Change it. There could be sediment or dirt in the tank that you drew up to the filter when you ran out of gas and it has built up and is blocking gas from getting into the engine.

1987 IROC, Ran out of gas,put gas in, now service engine light on

if you have high milieage you may have sucked in the gunk on the botton of your tank when you ran out of fuel check if you can hear the fuel pump running for about 2 sec with key on engine off if you hear nothing the problem is with your pump as they will burn out if they run dry for too long,if you hear the pump check for fuel pressure if pressure low check fuel filter to see if clogged by gunk from bottom of tank.
