Question about 2002 Subaru Forester

Rattle in low gears when clutch is let out...

I have a 2002 Subaru Forest...When I left the clutch out in low gears I hear a rattling and a squeaking noise. I just replaced the altinator, so I do not know if it has something to do with that. The noise seems to be coming from under the dash on the passenger side. It is driving me nuts and I want it fixed.

I know my inner and outter tie rods need to be replaced soon....I am not sure what the CV joints are.

Do you think this is a transmission problem?

I have noticed today that the shift shakes around alot more...also there is a "hum" coming from the engine I never heard before; usually at faster speeds.

Subaru's are notorious for having exhaust rattles from the heat shields on the catalytic converter.

Does the noise go away or lessen when the engine gets hot? I know it seems unrelated, but on my 2002 Impreza it made a lower groan sound at first when ever I would shift gears as the engine speed (RPM) dropped. I put up with it for a year then finally I got a stainless steel hose clamp from the hardware store and put it around the heat shield.

Truly I should just get a new catalytic converter, they are around $200, but the hose clamp stopped the noise.

This might not have anything to do with it your noise. It is a cheap and easy fix though.

Good Luck

If you have a clutch cable then replace the cable as it is jamming in the case.. The rattle may be the throw out bearing touching the pressure plate fingers and rattling as it spins around with no load on it.. It also could be that the clutch plate is in wrong and the centre hub is hitting on the flywheel bolts,.

Car Shakes Violently On 1St Gear

It sounds like you have a blown throw out bearing for the clutch operation. Fix it soon or you'll do a whole lot more damage to the drivetrain.

Won't go into gear when running, clutch rattle sound.

I would say it is your clutch (In your case it more than likely the throw out bearing if you hear rattle sound.) with the amount of miles and the year of the vehicle. Clutch plates, just like brake pads, eventually wear out. Consider yourself fortunate that you have gone this far without having to replace it.

Engine rattle

the "rattle" will be detonation caused by spontaneous combustion from incorrect air/fuel ratio and incorrect ignition timing
it is most prominent under acceleration or under load ( up hills , high speeds etc) and will melt pistons if left unattended
run the fault codes to find the faulty sensors , but I suspect that the heated oxygen sensors(HO2S) in the exhaust manifolds before the cat converters will be at fault as they report the gas composition back to the ECM so that the mixture can be adjusted correctly ( indicated by the poor economy)
there are knock sensors on the block which are indicated as faulty as they should be reporting this condition to the ECM to adjust the settings
finally it could come down to low fuel pressure or faulty injectors
what ever it is you need to get a proper fault code reading and have the problem fixed asap as it will cause engine damage if not fixed
