Two bolts and a vacuum line will take the EGR valve out .. then when you have it out you can look down there where it came out and see if it needs cleaned or not .. Probably not.. The EGR valve sometimes goes bad and causes your car to stall at stop signs or when you just let off of it... holler if you need more Jerry

Here is an overview for the code as it relates to Toyota cars.
I would go back and make sure the tubes and pipes are clear.
In most cases, the passage is plugged up, or the sensor does not "see" the flow.

Possible causes

- Faulty EGR Vacuum Modulator Valve
- Faulty EGR Valve
- Faulty EGR solenoid valve
- EGR solenoid valve harness is open or shorted
- EGR solenoid valve circuit poor electrical connection

Egr code wont clear it says not complete put a new one on still same problem

If the passages the valve is bolted to are still clogged up with carbon deposits, the egr valve won't work right. Did you verify the passages into the engine block are clear?

That is what cleared my low egr flow code. I've read alot of people replace the dpfe for this code and it doesn't help.

Okay...Ready? Remove the EGR valve and clean the throttle passages. They have to be relatively spotless. It's still reliable, just dirty. You're probably not going to believe how much carbon it can hold. All this carbon is restricting the passages. Clean the tubes as best as you can.

Give it a shot and get back to me with a good word. Good luck, but you won't need it.

I replaced EGR valve on my 97 Acura 3.0 CL after

I am fixing to change my EGR valve and the piece of paper that came with the part say this:

Important Notice
Before installing this part, check the EGR valve passage in the intake manifold and clear any carbon blockage. Failure to do so will result in repeat malfuntion of the EGR valve system. Refer to a technical service manual or contact a service dealer for proper cleaning procedures.

Hope this helps.

Before replacing anything else, it's important to clear the code before determining any more repairs are necessary. You can take the car to an autoparts store that features free diagnostic tests or you can disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 minutes to clear it. If after clearing the code P0401 still appears, then it comes down to 1 of 2 problems:
  1. Replace the DPFE sensor
  2. Replace the EGR valve
An illustration of both are found at the link below:
http://www.chiltonlibrary.com/content/images/9117/images/91174p58.gif

The DPFE is located at #1
The EGR is #2
Best of luck with your Sable.
