Is your car fuel injected or carburetted? if you say flooding i assume you have a carburetor, my only problem is your car is '05 which is usually fuel injected. but let's say it is carburetted, open carburetor and clean, check float valve for debris which prevent it from closing when reservoir is full, flooding occur when this happen. diy or have a mechanic do it for you.

I have a 1989 mercury grand marquis and when I turn the key on the fuel pump kicks on (but keeps running) and the car won't start. Any suggestions?

Is car flooding? Leaking injectors. Is car not flooding? Bad fuel pressure regulator, bad fuel pump pressure, leak in system.

Engine coughs and sputters and acts like its flooded on cold start.

Unlikely it's flooded, but I did have a similar problem with my car, and replacing the temperature sensor fixed it.

Car keeps flooding an wouldn't start

Michael,
Flooding is a known problem with the RX-8 (unfortunately). It is designed to run at high RPMs for extended periods. Flooding typically happens if and when you initially start the car and turn it off before it has had a chance to warm up sufficiently. If it does flood, you can put a jumper cable on the battery (because this process will quickly drop your battery charge) and press the accelerator all the way to the floor (you should also remove the 20 amp fuse for the fuel pump). Turn the ignition for about 20-30 secs and then rest for 30 secs. Keep doing this (with accelerator fully depressed) until the car starts. It may take as many as 10 to 15 repetitions of this before it starts. If this does not work, then you will have to remove the left front wheel to access and remove the spark plugs (and repeat with the plugs removed).

Floods when cold

Define flooding.

  1. Black smoke out of the tail pipe?

If the fuel return line is plugged,it will flood. If the fuel pressure regulator has lost its vacuum signal ,it will flood.

If there is a large vacuum leak, the O2 will see a lean condition and cause the rich condition.gas mileage will suck, big time.

This "flooding" happens when the engine is cold? ONLY?
Be sure the air filter is not clogged and the PCV is not plugged up solid.
Also, there are a few tubes from the valve cover that vents oil vapors into the air filter housing.

During this flood mode, hold the pedal to the floor and shut the engine OFF-it should NOT keep running.(Leaky injectors)...

Do this when engine is hot and cold.

My car keeps flooding and will not start, what could be causing the flooding.

I assume that your Buick has a carburetter. Flooding is normally as a result of a stuck or leaking float needle and seat. Replace these, also check that the float is not punctured and has therefore lost some of its buoyancy.

Cranks fine engine runs fine but you turn off. it is hard to crank keeps turning over finally cranks

CLEAN FUEL INJECTORS.THEY ARE FLOODING THE ENGINE.WHEN YOU TURN OFF ENGINE DIRTY CLOGGED FUEL INJECTORS WILL KEEP LEAKING FUEL FLOODING ENGINE.ALSO REPLACE AIR FILTER.

Where is the gas leaking from? To clear a flooded engine, keep your foot all the way down on the gas pedal while you try to start the car. As it starts keep holding until it sounds like it's smothing out then slowly release. You can also change the spark plugs if that does not work.
