either the fan motor is de-funk or the blower motor resistor is defective. check the motor with the blower switch on high and see if it has 12 volts to the connector of the motor.

First check the fuse and relay and power-stage unit (RESISTOR) AND TRY taking off the grill near wiper blades and you don have to remove wipers lift it up and there shoule be a cabin filther there take it out and you can see the blower fan and see if is stuck and what happens is the filther gets too dirty and all kinds of junk falls down into the motor and binds it up

First lets start with in least expensive thing. Fuses check to see if a fuse is blown. If no fuse is blown the next thing that could be the cause is. The fan motor has gone out. Located somewhere under dash on passenger side. Hope that helps.

1. Check fuses.
2. Could be AirCon control unit dead. New part very expensive. Used part cheaper. If you're in the UK try Salvo Group in Nottingham.

You have air in the cooling system.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6235876-no_heat_fan_blowing_cold_air . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

Hot and Cold no Blow

Most likely it will be the blower. Check to see if there is power to it, and then ground it. If it runs, the blower speed control is likely bad. If not it will be the blower motor.

1998 Volvo S70 2.0L Air conditioner not working correctly

This may be one or two different problems. One could be the climate control unit itself. Surprisingly the problem with the air not changing the source will likely be remedied by a reprogramming by a Volvo dealer. Defrost is the delfault outlet if there is a problem with that system. As for the dial not having detents and the cold instead of hot air in the pass side, that could be programming, a disconnect with the heater door for the passenger side or it could be the control unit. 98 is a difficult year to diagnose and the dealer is likely the only one who can properly diagnose this car. The download at the dealer is an inexpensive fix. If there is a mechanical problem within the air system that could prove more costly. I'm not sure how much the control unit for the climate control system, but there are usually quite a few on ebay. Good luck and I would suggest visiting the dealer first for this one as it is the least expensive fix and could very well be the only problem.

Hello Joan,
The climate controls on your Volvo are all electronic at the control end, but likely have little vacuum motors to control the opening and closing of heater valves and air directional flaps in the innards of the dashboard. With the "mature" nature of your vehicle, it is sometimes a cracked vacuum hose or that the rubber end is getting a little hard and now leaking at the nipple where it is plugging into the vacuum valve. IF this is the issue, you MAY be able to here a hissing noise immediately after turning off the engine. Crawl down and get your head (ears) right under the dash. There may be a cardboard/plastic cover plate on the underside of the dash that you have to remove to get access.
But from the symptoms that you describe in your post, "Temperature dial has lost it's clicks"... I SUSPECT that the contacts on the control module may be totally worn out for both the direction of flow and the temperature control. Modules are available on eBay/Amazon (usually used) and it should be quite straight forward on how to remove / replace. The link below provides both links to purchase the control and also some YouTubes on how to replace it.
Hey... do you have a Pick-n-Pull or similar self-serve auto-wrecker near by? Often you can see what vehicles they have on their lot. It appears that s70 v70 and c 70 Volvos from 1998-2000 all have the same control unit. I've also included the part number in one of the photos... do a search for that and you may find more hits.

I hope this helps you Joan!
