    Heated Oxygen Sensor
The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) (Figure 33) detects the presence of oxygen in the exhaust and produces a variable voltage according to the amount of oxygen detected. A high concentration of oxygen (lean air/fuel ratio) in the exhaust produces a low voltage signal less than 0.4 volt. A low concentration of oxygen (rich air/fuel ratio) produces a high voltage signal greater than 0.6 volt. The HO2S provides feedback to the PCM indicating air/fuel ratio in order to achieve a near stoichiometric air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1 during closed loop engine operation. The HO2S generates a voltage between 0.0 and 1.1 volts.

Embedded with the sensing element is the HO2S heater. The heating element heats the sensor to temperatures of 800°C (1400° F). At approximately 300°C (600° F) the engine can enter closed loop operation. The VPWR circuit supplies voltage to the heater and the PCM will complete the ground when the proper conditions occur. For model year 1998 a new HO2S heater and heater control system are installed on some vehicles. The high power heater reaches closed loop fuel control temperatures. The use of this heater requires that the HO2S heater control be duty cycled, to prevent damage to the heater. The 6 ohm design is not interchangeable with new style 3.3 ohm heater. Vehicles using the new fast light off (FLO) HO2S heater for 1998 are:

Town Car and Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis

check the wiring and the connector pins. It's not a biggie if this code is there. Only big if check engine light is flashing.

If you have replaced the oxygen sensors and code remains try having the code cleared by OBDII diagnostic reader if problem persists you may have problem with connection or signal wire

Getting a code P0420 on my 2006 V8 Mountaineer

PO420-"Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1".Most likely you have a bad O2 sensor on bank 1(driver's side). There are 2,replace them both to make it easier.(My guess is the sensor before the catalytic converter is the bad one,if you want to try just one.)

Engine codes displayed on OBD tool

You might want to start with spark plugs. I'm not sure if that year has coil on plug ignition, but if it doesn't, spark plug wires are probably in order as well. Some of the O2 sensor faults could be caused by the poor ignition your mis-fires are causing. Sensor 1 is closest to the engine, sensor 2 is further away, on the other side of the Catalytic converter.

I have a 2003 Mountaineer v-8 AWD with "check

Left side,Drivers side

Either in the converter inlet or just ahead if it

Bank (1) Pass Side
Bank (2) Drivers Side
Sensor (1) closest to engine
Sensor (2) monitor sensor in outlet of converter

An O2 Code does not mean it is bad or needs to be replaced.
Could be any number of other causes that set a MIL Lamp

Po130 bank 1 sensor1 my question is where is bank1 sensor1 on a mercury montannier 98 v8

Bank 1 is always on the same side as the number 1 cylinder. Bank 2 is the other side of the engine. Sensor 1 is always before the catalytic converter. Sensor 2 is always after the catalytic converter.

Bank 1 sensor 1 is on the passenger side before the catalytic converter.
