When in neutral the car does not move. If the parking brake is stuck on, what would cause this?

  • Kevin Rahme May 11, 2010

if you put the car in neutral can you push it foreward

if not the park brake is stuck on

and if the car rolls a head then I would say the clutch is the problem

Although you've released the parking brake, inside the car, are you sure the cable moved and disengaged the rear brakes ? A physical removal of the rear wheels will be required and parking brake cable and linkage operation inspected. If the cable appears to be a BINDING , a heavy dose of WD-40 will cure it. Hope this helps

Park brake keeps flashing and beeps

Usually this means one of two things. Your parking brake is still applied and your shifter is not in park...or, your parking brake is not fully retracted and not touching it's fully retracted limit switch. Cycle your parking brake several times with the vehicle off. When you release it let it disengage fully. Start the vehicle and put it in gear but don't travel (foot on regular brake). If your parking brake is fully disengaged then your dash light for the parking brake should be extinguished. If you STILL have this problem then your limit switch needs to be adjusted or replaced.

1975 cadillac coup deville acts like brakes or parking brakes are locked up engaged. In a bind and will barely move in gear. parking brake pedal is up in the disengaged position. Help?

It is not unusual for the parking brake cable assembly to seize due to corrosion. Also, the rear brakes are self-adjusting when backing up and can eventually wind up by themselves until they lock up. Start by removing the rear wheels and checking the brake shoe assemblies. Due to the age of the vehicle, this can be quite a chore, as the brake adjuster may have to be manually backed off before the brake drums will come off. Also, if the brake cable is seized, you may have to remove/manually loosen it as well. It is a part that needs lubricating periodically so it works freely, and may need to be replaced.

Smell of burning rubber on offside rear wheel. Intermittent. Kia Ceed 113bhp 1.6

I think you are on the right track with the hand brake/ parking brake. A vehicle can still drive if its slightly engaged and you would notice some sort of burning smell from the area. Try engaging the brake and disengaging the brake a few times and see if it releases completely. There may be an issue with the line causing it to "stick" here and there. Good luck! Cars are complicated but troubleshooting the small things before spending hundreds in labour is always wise!

Would a air bubble in the brake line prevent a caliper from retracting after I let off the brake pedal?

No.
A bubble in the line would act like there is no fluid in the system.
If the regular brake warning light is on, it could be a problem with the parking brake, or the master cylinder is low on fluid.
A collapsed brake hose will keep a caliper engaged, but only on one wheel.

Parking brake light keeps fashing on and off and at the sametime the day time lights flash as well.

The daytime running lights go off when the parking/emergency brake is engaged. There is a switch located on the parking brake lever to tell the car the parking brake is on. It sounds like that switch is intermittently indicating the brake is on. Make sure the lever is all the way disengaged. Move it up and down, jiggle it to see if you can get the light to go on/off. If the lever is disengaged you probably have a bad switch or bad wiring to the switch.

Either remove the drivers side rear wheel and disconnect linkage or cut the cable from underneath (do this as a last resort... if you want to keep your emergency brake for future use, you'll have to replace the cable.)

Check the E-Brake, make sure that the ebrake is not engaged and that it is fully disengaging. If that is not the problem, then there is something with the brake calipers or rotors that are not allowing your brakes to fully disengage

2008 cobalt daytime running lights not working

Check to make sure your parking brake is not partially engaged. If the parking brake is engaged even to one click off from the released position the DRL module will be disengaged. Also there may be a problem with the parking brake position sensor which is responsible for determining if the parking brake is partially engaged.
