Question about 1994 GMC Suburban

1 Answer

My 94 GMC Suburban is still not shifting from first to second, only until it warms up. I have noticed that if I drive it in first gear before warming up the transmision the speedometer does not indicate any MPH and as soon as it shirts to second gear which may be 3 or 4 miles, depending on the temperature the speedometer all of a sudden starts registering. What does the speedometer and gear shifting have in common? Is it possible that the problem may be related? Mike

Yes. You are correct. I took it to a shop that had some equiptment to trouble shoot. Unfortunately if I would have received this info sooner I could have saved a couple hundred $ as they replaced a module under the dash that didn't really fix the problem then when I took it back they found the little wheel that transmits a small amount of voltage to the computer that tells it to shift. Working good now and saved me a rebuild.

    Thanks
    Mike

yes! its the speed sensor, check wiring circuit or may be sensor itself, sensor sends pulse signals to pcm that controls shifting.engine light must be on,scan for trouble code!

sounds like the computer has a glitch. you might need to go to the dealer to have the computer trained(reprogrammed) or to see if you need a new one.

SOURCE: 1993 GMC 1500 4x4 poor shifting

this may be due to a poor connection at the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission, pull the connector off the sensor and clean it with contact cleaner, if the problem persists replace the speed sensor. there are 2 diff ones here is a picture of the most common one for an auto trans.3deea43.jpg

Trans sticks in 2nd gear

"...he had to put hi foot on the gas pedal several times..." I do not understand what this means, but does it still fine? If it is then you likely had a stuck shift valve, but why is the valve stuck? Is the valve body contaminated as a result of the trans "coming apart". If it is still not shifting out of second gear then you may have a 3-4 clutch problem, which is a very common failure and requires overhaul to correct it.

Check your auto transmission levels. Slow, often jerky, gear shifting is often accompanied by a bit of a jolt when putting it into drive from park or neutral. When fluids are low the torque converter impeller has to work harder to get pressure up and therefore it is slower at shifting to the next gear . Low transmission fluids also lead to poor fuel consumption.

Are you sure this is a 1991. Gm didn't put electronic controlled shift solenoids on the 700r4 until 1993. This sounds like a shift solenoid but if it is a 1991 it could be a governor valve.

Transmission wont shift into 3rd gear.

I had this exact problem on my 2005 5.3L Suburban... It would shift into 1 and 2 and reverse, but not 3 and 4.

I took it into a transmission shop, and he said the 3-4 shift solenoid was burned up. Wanted 1500 to fix it. Far from home, so I have to pay it.
