Question about 1988 Dodge Aries

Emissions My 88 dodge aries did not pass emissions because the hydrocarbons (hc) was 3.31 state required 3.00,and the carbon monoxide(co0 was 26.88 state required 25.00.

its your catalytic converter (colloquially, "cat" or "catcon") is a vehicle emissions control device which converts toxic byproducts of combustion in the exhaust of an internal combustion engine to less toxic substances by way of catalysed chemical reactions. The specific reactions vary with the type of catalyst installed. Most present-day vehicles that run on gasoline are fitted with a "three way" converter, so named because it converts the three main pollutants in automobile exhaust: an oxidizing reaction converts carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) to CO2 and water vapour, and a reduction reaction converts oxides of nitrogen (NOx) to produce CO2, nitrogen (N2), and water (H2O).[1] The first widespread introduction of catalytic converters was in the United States market, where 1975 model year gasoline-powered automobiles were so equipped to comply with tightening U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations on automobile exhaust emissions.[2][3][4][5] These were "two-way" converters which combined carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). Two-way catalytic converters of this type are now considered obsolete, having been supplanted except on lean burn engines[citation needed] by "three-way" converters which also reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx).[2]
Catalytic converters are still most commonly used in exhaust systems in automobiles, but are also used on generator sets, forklifts, mining equipment, trucks, buses, locomotives, motorcycles, airplanes and other engine-fitted devices. They are also used on some wood stoves to control emissions.[6] This is usually in response to government regulation, either through direct environmental regulation or through health and safety regulations.
Catalytic oxidization is also used, but for the purpose of safe, flameless generation of heat rather than destruction of pollutants, in catalytic heaters.

1989 Toyota 22re fails California Emissions Test. Rebuilt the engine 20K or so miles ago. Has passed most tests with just a little bit of timing adjustments. At 15 MPH, (1670 RPM) HC measures 153...


HC is hydrocarbons or unburnt fuel.(raw fuel ).NO no such gas measurement.did you mean CO this is carbon monoxide or incomplete combustion.(all the fuel is not being burnt).if you mean NOX this is nitrates of oxide and is related to a heat problem.(motor running hot,bad catalytic converter).its probably getting too much fuel and not burning it all,possibly tune-up problem,carburetor(if it has one),bad fuel injection system(dirty injectors),computer(if it has one)may be getting a wrong signal.these are in reference of high HC and CO.for high NOX cooling system not keeping motor cool enough,cooling fan problem(weather clutch fan or electrically controlled cooling fan),poor cooling system circulation,bad catalytic converter.not a running lean problem as the other gases indicate rich problem.the converter may not be able to convert the emission gases to H2O and CO2 out the tailpipe.

what about the air filter is it clean ,silly question i know but you would be surprissed ,does this vehicle have one O2 sensor or two one after the cat as well or is it too old for two O2 sensors ,i know most europeon market vehicles didnt have cats till 1992 and most didnt have two sensors till around 2000 ,also check the two white or two black wires on sensor for 12v these are the heater feed wires for the sensors

I got a 95 corsica 2.2L failed emission test the carbon monoxide is too high the hydrocarbons passed but were higher than previous tests and the nox passed but were higher than previous tests...


sounds like a bad cat and o2 sensor. try a scanner, if the downstream sensor is attempting to make a 99% fuel trim adjustment, you can bet it needs changing along with the catalytic converter. get someone to follow you and accelerate hard, a rotton egg smell is a dead giveaway

i woulsd try and change the o2 sensor located Under hood, passenger side, lower engine area, mounted in exhaust manifold ,and you have a catalytic convertor has it ever been changed i had an s-10 that always barely passed inspection even when brand new good luck

What are the state-of-the-art technology sensors for measuring emissions, are these emissions dynamic or static measurements ?


There are no specific names for the sensor devices used as stations because they are special purpose, not exactly household names, and don't all use the same methods. But CO is carbon monoxide, particulates are also called unburned hydrocarbons, and NO2 is called oxides of nitrogen.
The biggest thing to know about emission station testing is that it intentionally does not work.
If they really wanted to reduce pollution, they would capture the exhaust in a big bag, after running the engine for a minute or so, and then calculate the total pollution. But they don't. They constantly just monitor percentage, so a car with a big engine and tail pipe can pass even though it put out 10 times what a little engine that fails does.

high hydrocarbons indicates head gasket(1 or both) leaking , carbon monoxide is a worn out catylitic convertor which both could lead to the oxy sensor getting a false reading
