Question about 1996 Buick LeSabre

My mechanic told me that the bushings that hold up the subframe are showing signs of cracking. He said that since the steering column is attached I would lose control if the bushings broke. Is it possible that just 2 bushings are supporting the frame?

It is highly unlikely that the bushings will fail. They do tend to crack alittle, but the bolts will still hold the subframe on. Now if they are rusted out, this is a possibility. You do have 4 bushings holding the subframe on also. 2 at the front, and 2 at the back.

It sounds like the shift tube bushings are worn out. There are usually 2 u shaped clamps that have nylon bushings that hold the shift tube to the steering clumn. If loose, that throws off the shift position, could be btween 2 gears at once, and throws off the park - neutral safety switch. Fix that first.

How to adjust clutch pedal on 86 mustang lx


clutch is supposed to be self adjusting. Here are instructions for replacing the adjuster:


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION


See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
  2. Remove the steering wheel using a steering wheel puller, Tool T67L-3600-A or equivalent.
  3. Remove the lower dash panel section to the left of the steering column.
  4. Remove the shrouds from the steering column.
  5. Disconnect the brake lamp switch and the master cylinder pushrod from the brake pedal.
  6. Rotate the clutch quadrant forward and unhook the clutch cable from the quadrant. Allow the quadrant to slowly swing rearward.
  7. Remove the bolt holding the brake pedal support bracket lateral brace to the left side of the vehicle.
  8. Disconnect all electrical connectors from the steering column.
  9. Remove the 4 nuts that hold the steering column to the brake pedal support bracket and lower the steering column to the floor.
  10. Remove the 4 booster nuts that hold the brake pedal support bracket to the dash panel.
  11. Remove the bolt that holds the brake pedal support bracket to the underside of the instrument panel, and remove the brake pedal support bracket assembly from the vehicle.
  12. Remove the clutch pedal shaft nut and the clutch pedal, as outlined above.
  13. Slide the self-adjusting mechanism out of the brake pedal support bracket.
  14. Examine the self-adjusting mechanism shaft bushings on either side of the brake pedal support bracket, and replace if worn.

To install:
  1. Lubricate the self-adjusting mechanism shaft with motor oil and install the mechanism into the brake pedal support bracket.
  2. Position the quadrant towards the top of the vehicle. Align the flats on the shaft with the flats in the clutch pedal assembly, and install the retaining nuts. Tighten to 32-50 ft. lbs. (43-67 Nm).
  3. Position the brake pedal support bracket assembly beneath the instrument panel, aligning the four holes with the studs in the dash panel. Install the four nuts loosely.
  4. Install the bolt through the support bracket and into the instrument panel. Tighten to 13-25 ft. lbs. (18-34 Nm).
  5. Tighten the four booster nuts that hold the brake pedal support bracket to the dash panel to 13-25 ft. lbs. (18-34 Nm).
  6. Connect the brake lamp switch and the master cylinder pushrod to the brake pedal.
  7. Attach the clutch cable to the quadrant.
  8. Position the steering column onto the four studs in the support bracket and start the four nuts.
  9. Connect the steering column electrical connectors.
  10. Install the steering column shrouds.
  11. Install the brake pedal support lateral brace.
  12. Tighten the steering column attaching nuts to 20-37 ft. lbs. (27-50 Nm).
  13. Install the lower dash panel section.
  14. Install the steering wheel.
  15. Connect the battery cable to the negative terminal on the battery.
  16. Check the steering column for proper operation.
  17. Depress the clutch pedal several times to adjust the cable.

How do i install a new swaybar on a 2000 buick century . can i take wheels off and put swaybar through ther?


Removal & Installation Because the front stabilizer shaft is mounted to the powertrain subframe, the subframe (with the powertrain) must be lowered to service the stabilizer bar. This is a lengthy and exacting procedure requiring special lifting and jacking equipment. In addition, the rack and pinion steering assembly stub shaft must be disconnected from the steering column. GM specifies that the subframe-to-body bolts, once disturbed, must be replaced with new service replacement parts. Procure the necessary hardware before beginning this procedure. This is not a job for the inexperienced or ill-equipped.

Subframe damage

Steering wheel has play in it.it seems like its coming from the column.


Check to make sure the intermediate shaft (the u-joint at the bottom of the column) is not cracked or worn, and that the pinch bolts are tightened.

Check to make sure the busings that secure the rack to the subframe are not worn out.

Check to make sure that the subframe bolts are all there, that the washers are there, and that the subframe bushings are not worn out (chunks missing and nasty greasy is a bad sign).

Check to make sure the tie rod ends are not worn out.

Check to make sure the lower control arm bushing is not worn out.

Check your front tire pressures.

you can buy remanufactured at parts store or buy used from car-part.com. page with * is lowest cost.

It's a pretty big job for a novice.

here's 96 taurus steps with 3.8l engine. don't have 94. should be similar

Removal
SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Tool Number Description T94T-6000-AH Exhaust Connector Holder Tool T57L-500-B Bench Mounted Holding Fixture
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  1. Position steering wheel one-half turn to right and lock wheel.
  1. Position steering column boot out of the way. Remove pinch bolt retaining steering column intermediate shaft coupling to power steering short rack and separate.
  1. Disconnect PCV vent tube and vacuum supply hose from clean air tube. Loosen two hose clamps retaining clean air tube and position out of the way.
  1. Disconnect power steering auxiliary actuator and power steering pressure switch.
  1. Remove two heat shield pushpin retainers from power steering hose bracket and remove heat shield.
  1. Remove one retaining bolt from left turn pressure hose bracket.
  1. Position drain pan under steering gear.
  1. Remove power steering pressure and return hoses from fittings on power steering rack. Position both hoses out of the way. Disconnect rear HO2S connector at steering rack and position out of the way.
  1. Partially raise vehicle.
  1. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
  1. Remove LH upper stabilizer bar link retaining nut and position link out of the way.
  1. Loosen LH tie-rod jam nut. Remove cotter pin and tie-rod retaining nut at lower control arm. Using tie-rod end separator or equivalent, remove tie-rod from control arm and from steering gear.
  1. Loosen RH tie-rod jam nut. Remove cotter pin and tie-rod retaining nut at lower control arm. Using tie-rod end separator or equivalent, remove tie-rod from control arm and from steering gear.
  1. Raise vehicle.
  1. Remove drain pan.
  1. Remove two steering gear retaining nuts at front subframe.
  1. Install Exhaust Connector Holder Tool T94T-6000-AH on flex tube.
  1. Remove bolts, nuts, and gasket from where flex tube and converter Y-pipe connect. Separate tube from pipe.
  1. Position Rotunda Power Train Lift 014-00765 or equivalent with wood blocks approximately 1016 mm (40 inches) in length (secured to lift) under subframe and raise.
  1. Remove two rear subframe retaining bolts and lower subframe approximately 102 mm (4 inches).
  1. Rotate power steering rack to clear bolts from subframe and remove assembly through LH wheel well.
  1. Remove two bolts retaining power steering hose bracket to short rack and remove bracket.
  1. Mount steering gear assembly in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B.
  1. Remove four clamps retaining bellows to steering gear and tie-rods. Remove bellows and power steering gear rack tube.
  1. Position rack and pinion steering gear so several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear with adjustable wrench on end teeth only, while loosening inner tie-rods. Remove tie-rods from steering rack. Remove steering rack from bench-mounted holding fixture.
Installation
  1. Mount new steering gear assembly in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B.
  1. Position rack and pinion steering gear so several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear with adjustable wrench on end teeth only, while tightening inner tie-rods. Tighten to 90-110 Nm (66-81 lb-ft).
  1. Apply Steering Gear Grease C3AZ-19518-A meeting Ford specification ESB-M1C119-A to groove in connecting rods where tie-rod bellows clamp to front wheel spindle tie-rod and uniformly apply to inner diameter of bellows. Install bellows and gear rack tube onto short rack.
  1. Install new inner and outer bellows clamps.
  1. Remove steering gear from Bench Mounted Holding Fixture and place on bench.
  1. Install power steering hose bracket and retaining bolts at top of steering gear. Tighten to 9-12 Nm (80-106 lb-in).
  1. Install steering gear retaining bolts in steering gear housing and install short rack through LH wheel well.
  1. Position steering rack and retaining bolts through subframe. Raise powertrain lift until rear subframe contacts body and install retaining bolts. Tighten to 135-195 Nm (100-144 lb-ft). Lower and remove powertrain lift from vehicle.
  1. Install power steering short rack-to-subframe nuts. Tighten to 97-132 Nm (72-97 lb-ft).
  1. Install new gasket, bolts and nuts at converter Y-pipe and flex tube. Tighten to 34-46 Nm (26-34 lb-ft).
  1. Remove flex tube holder.
  1. Partially lower vehicle.
  1. Install LH jam nut and outer tie-rod to inner tie-rod. Install tie-rod to steering knuckle. Install retaining nut. Tighten to 47-63 Nm (35-46 lb-ft). Install new cotter pin.
  1. Install LH stabilizer bar link and retaining nut. Tighten to 76.5-103.5 Nm (57-76 lb-ft).
  1. Install RH jam nut and outer tie-rod to inner tie-rod. Install tie-rod to steering knuckle. Install retaining nut. Tighten to 47-63 Nm (35-46 lb-ft). Install new cotter pin.
  1. Install tire and wheel assemblies. Tighten to 115-142 Nm (85-105 lb-ft).
  1. Lower vehicle.
  1. Remove old Teflon® O-rings from pressure and return hoses. Install new Teflon® O-rings on pressure and return hoses.
  1. Install power steering pressure hose and return hose to fittings on power steering short rack. Tighten to 33-41 Nm (24-30 lb-ft).
  1. Install one retaining bolt to left-turn pressure hose bracket. Tighten to 9-12 Nm (80-106 lb-in).
  1. Connect rear HO2S connectors, power steering auxiliary actuator, and power steering pressure switch electrical connectors.
  1. Position heat shield at power steering hose bracket and install pushpin retainers.
  1. Install clean air tube, connect PCV vent tube and vacuum supply hose, and tighten hose clamps. Tighten to 2-3 Nm (18-27 lb-in).
  1. Install steering column intermediate shaft coupling to power steering short rack and install pinch bolt. Tighten to 41-51 Nm (30-38 lb-ft). Position steering column boot over steering rack.
  1. Fill and purge system.
  1. Check operation.
  1. Adjust only toe for alignment. Refer to Section 04-00 .

Steering Rack boot replacement


In my opinion, removing the front subframe makes this job much easier.

Jack up and suitably support the front of the car so it is in a wheels free state.
With wheels removed;

  • Remove the anti-roll bar drop links from the anti-roll bar
  • Free off the lower arm ball joints off
  • Remove the track rod ends from the swivel hubs
  • Remove the nut and bolt and special clip on the lower steering column universal joint
  • loosen off and disconnect the feed and return pipes to the power ram (beware stinking power steering fluid pouring everywhere!)
Steering and suspension wise, the subframe should be free!



  • Remove the nut and bolt that secures the lower engine mounting to its bracket (the bolt that goes through the big round rubber mount at the back of the engine)
  • Disconnect all relevant gear linkage rods (this will be clear when you are under there!)
  • Support the subframe with a jack or somesuch and free off the 6, 18mm bolts that secure the subframe to the body shell.
  • remove all subframe mounting bolts.
  • lower the jack that is supporting the subframe, it should all drop quite nicely and then get stuck on the steering column universal joint! A good old college shove frees this and then you should be able to remove your subframe assembly from under the car.

hi, is this front or rear anti-rollbar? Front ones are a right pain, you have to drop the front subframe for access. If you don't have a wheelfree ramp then it's not a job for the faint hearted! You also need to disconnect the steering column to allow the subframe to drop far enough to get at the bolts that secure the collars over the bushes. Before you disconnect the steering column, point the wheels straight ahead and remove the key so that the steering lock stops the steering wheel turning, this is to prevent damage to the contact reel for the air bag, which can be damaged if the steering is turned too far beyond normal rotation!
