Question about Volkswagen Jetta

4 Answers

The automatic transmission in my 2008 VW Jetta 2.0t stopped functioning while I was driving. The reading comes out something like "No communication between transmission and computer". I rebuilt the car after a front-end collision and had driven it about 600 miles. When the plug to the transmission was pulled off water poured out (I had driven through a rainstorm the day before.)

I was driving at about 65mph when suddenly the rpms shot up as if the car had dropped to a lower gear - I slowed immediatedly to about 45mph where the rpms were not so high. when I stopped the car, it would not shift out of 1st gear at all. It eventually would not engage at all. The devise was connect to read the computer which simply responded that there was no communication between the Trans & the computer. It does not sound mechanical to me but electrical - something in the wiring.

I will try this as soon as I can. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks!

We have tried to locate the transmission control module which the programs say for the 2008 should be on the left fender but is not. Do you have any idea where else it would be located? It is the same case on another '08 Jetta 2.0t - it is not on the left fender. Thanks

The water is leaking in from the radiator,The radiator and transmission cooler are one unit with separate chambers,Replace the radiator,Flush the transmission and refill,You may need to flush multiple times to remove all the water from the transmission though.

The car is going into "Limp Home Mode"
Check your cables for corrosion or bad grounds.
Many times the BCM gets confused when it gets signals it is not expecting.

The water intrusion into the connector is the problem, this may have shorted out the transmission control module as well, clean the water out of the connector with alcohol or other drying agent, then blow it out with compressed air, find out why the water got into the connector in the 1st place, these connectors are what is called "Weather Pack" and should not leak water, you have a soft seal in the connector to keep water out, check it for tears or other reasons it might leak, replace the connector as necessary to correct the water intrusion problem, until the water is stopped from entering the trans connector u will have problems with the transmission..

It sounds like a broken input shaft or torque convertor. I would recommend taking it to a shop to replace this, where they can diagnose it further. It's definatly a problem with one of these two components, most likely the imput shaft, which has splines on it that can easily be worn out or broken. ------------------------ Check that the car is in park (P). Make sure the brake is pressed, and start the engine. Automatic transmission cars will not start unless the gear shift is in park.
--------------------- Probably the rear motor mount. Check also the two front mounts.
---------------------- if its leakage then,Check your transmission fluid and for fluid all over the road you were driving on. Seems you lost fluid, have a busted bottom pan or other. Maybe the old burnt fluid clogged the trans. Don't even try to drive it. Replace the fluid and filter and clean out the cover. If that works do it again in 100 miles of driving.
please do rate the solution.keep updated.thank you for using fixya.thanks

How to check transmission fluid level

Most 1995-on VW models don't have a transmission fluid dipstick for checking the transmission fluid level. To fill and check the level of the VW automatic transmission fluid you have to remove a plug on the side or bottom (location depends on model and if you have an automatic vs. manual transmission) of the transmission drain pan. The factory manual refers the expensive VAG 1924 special tool for pumping the VW automatic transmission fluid into the oil pan.

That specific transmission is known for failure. Sometimes it's premature failure (in your case) and sometimes they have 150k miles, but that specific automatic transmission will always fail.
There are plenty of stories online about premature failure of the 01M VW transmission...

Inside the transmission case above the pan. You should probably let a transmission mechanic handle this one.
